Pattonville Girls Net Fourth Straight District Soccer Crown, Take Down Hazelwood West

Senior scoring dynamo Kailey Utley leads the way with a hat trick, in Pirates 5-0 win over Wildcats.

Pattonville goal scoring dynamo Kailey Utley admitted late in Friday's MSHSAA Class 3 District 5 girls soccer championship game, that she sometimes uses an unusual tactic when she makes her move toward the opposing goal. "Sometimes I close my eyes, and the ball just goes in," is what Utley told teammates who were congratulating her after she scored for the third time in the Pirates district title game showdown against rival Hazelwood West, at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex. The other Pattonville players laughed when Utley said that, and it's a pretty good bet that she was just joking. But if that statement were true, shooting with her eyes closed was effective for Utley, Pattonville's all-time goal scorer, who delivered in a big way once …

Yes or No: $700M on St. Louis Rams' Dome Upgrades?

The St. Louis Rams have outlined a renovation plan for the Edward Jones Dome that is estimated to cost $700 million.

The Rams want us to buy them a new house. Just fixing up its current home—the Edward Jones Dome—won't do. Instead, the St. Louis football franchise expects an extreme makeover, to the tune of $700 million, as it is estimated by a company hired by the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission (CVC) to analyze the team's counter proposal to a the CVC's own plan to upgrade the Edward Jones Dome with a $124 million facelift. If someone doesn't cough up the $700 mil to redo the Dome, it is feared the team will take its football and go home to Los Angeles, where it came from before it was the St. Louis franchise. All of this wrangling was set in motion in 1995 when the team negotiated a 30-year lease with the CVC. It was stipulated that the …

That amendment prevents an increase in state residents percentage of taxes from income. I do not believe it would cover a hotel tax or tourism tax. The two articles I saw said that there are many loop holes in the amendment. I could be wrong.   more ›

District Champs! Parkway North Wins First Baseball Title Since 2003

The Vikings advance to Tuesday's state sectional round against Ft. Zumwalt South.

Parkway North took an early lead and withstood a late rally in the Class 4 District 7 championship baseball game, beating Francis Howell North by a 7-5 margin Wednesday at De Smet. Backed by timely hitting and a servicable start from sophomore pitcher Joe Hope, Parkway North brought home its first district championship since 2003. The fourth-seeded Vikings dispatched No. 5 Pattonville 4-3 in the first round and No. 1 CBC 11-6 in the semifinals prior to Wednesday's win over the No. 2 Knights. Parkway North coach Fred Friedman said his team hadn't spoken about the game that ended its 2011 season, a 19-1 district loss to De Smet. But once the Vikings recorded the final out against Francis Howell North, Friedman finally felt comfortable …

Scott Van Slyke Is Finally a Major Leaguer

The son of former 101 Sports Baseball Analyst and MLB veteran Andy Van Slyke is up for the first time at age 26 with the first-place Dodgers.

With All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp sidelined with a left hamstring injury, the door has swung wide open for St. Louis hitting star Scott Van Slyke. Van Slyke, son of former big leaguer and one time 101 ESPN Baseball Analyst Andy Van Slyke, was called to the Dodgers this week, and has reached base his first three appearances at the plate in the big leagues. His first major league appearance in a Dodgers uniform was a broken bat single. It has been an inglorious climb for this 6-foot-5, 250 pounder, drafted by L.A. in the 16th round in 2006. After hitting .348 at Chatanooga in AA and tearing it up for the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes at .348 his moment has come. This is what the website prospect of the day has to say about this former Bomber. …

Creve Coeur Track Star Conquers District Competition

Amos Bartelsmeyer nets new MICDS school record in the wake of his 800 meter performance on top of a 1600 meter win.

Amos Bartelsmeyer of MICDS is one cool customer. This lanky, 6-foot-0 junior is absolutely terrorizing opponents on the track this spring. On the friendly confines of Weiss track at the Rams home turf, he was totally dominating at both 800 and 1600 meters. He’s refined middle distance running into a strategic event while turning it artistic at the same time. His running style is clearly poetry in motion. Matter of fact, this talented, long-gaited junior blew away the field in both District 3 races. He was first to cross the 1600 meters in 4:27.84 in what turned out to be a very pedestrian time for him. He actually qualified for the event much faster at 4:12.94. This was a highly tactical race where no one wanted to take the lead for the …

Freshman Phenom Ashanti Carey Flashing the Future of Pattonville Girls Soccer

Superfast freshman is among the top scoring underclassmen in the area, and ranks just behind scoring champ Kailey Utley in Pirate goals this season.

MARYLAND HEIGHTS -- All her life Ashanti Carey has heard people tell her she should be running track. Never mind that she has take-your-breath-away kind of speed, people knew that her parents Apollo and Amanda Carey were track stars in high school and college, and they just figured Ashanti should go into the family business, so to speak. So one day not long ago, Ashanti Carey did join a club track team, and in her first real race against real competition, she set a new club record for the 100-meter dash. Like we said, the girl is astonishingly fast. But there was one little problem Ashanti had with running track -- she just didn't like it. "Oh my god, I hated it," she said. "I gave it a try, but I almost had a nervous breakdown or …

Blues Ownership Back in Local Hands for First Time Since 1999

Beer disributor Tom Stillman leads local ownership group.

Almost four months after a St. Louis Blues executive told a Creve Coeur-Olivette Chamber of Commerce audience that the long-discussed sale of the team was "reaching the finish line," the transaction is now a done deal. When local businessman Tom Stillman took to the microphone at the Scottrade Center Thursday, it marked the first time the St. Louis Blues were in local hands since Kiel Center Partners--(under the watchful eyes of Mark Sauer and Jerry Ritter) ran the show in 1991-1999. The St. Louis Blues have battled the tides of changing economies and different places in the standings since the days when insurance magnate Sidney Salomon brought professional hockey to St. Louis for the 1966-67 season. An array of different owners with …

Durron Neal Knows His Time At Oklahoma is Now

The De Smet senior hasn't graduated yet, but news out of Sooner nation this week has expectations and pressure building now.

Were it not for Missouri's departure from the Big 12, Tiger football fans would likely be paying more attention than they are to news which broke out of the University of Oklahoma football program Wednesday night. According to ESPN and multiple other outlets, the Sooners have suspended four players indefinitely, including three wide receivers. The discipline means the team's incoming recruits, including De Smet standout Durron Neal, who were likely to be counted on to contribute as freshmen regardless, now find themselves under a larger spotlight. Neal, active on social media, tweeted last night, "the pressure is on, and thats when i'm at my best! the big stage doesnt scare me one bit. This what I dream for," and later "my childhood dream …

Pattonville Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With Scintillating Win Over Timberland

Seven Pirate seniors, including three-sport stars Kailey Utley and Mikala McGhee, go out in style with 4-0 over visitors from Wentzville.

PARKWAY NORTH HIGH SCHOOL -- Around this time of year, every year, at high schools all over the country, different sports teams like to take time out and honor their graduating seniors for four years of great play and sportsmanship. But one thing about those Senior Night celebrations is clear -- nobody does it better than the folks from Pattonville High School. Even under uncommon circumstances, like Wednesday night, when a rain-out and field construction at their own campus forced the Pirate girls soccer team to host its Senior Night celebration at rival Parkway North High. It didn’t seem to matter one bit, as the seven Pirate seniors -- Kailey Utley, Mariah Null, Mindy Fitterling, Kacie Hulse, Aubrey Boulicault, Kimberly Hulse, and …

Creve Coeur Area Could Have Many Olympic Ties This Summer

Athletes from Ladue, Parkway North and Missouri Baptist are all in contention for spots in London.

The 2012 Olympic Games begin in London on July 27, and if all goes as planned, Creve Coeur area athletes could find themselves in the middle of all the action. Parkway North Swimmer Heather Lundstrom will swim in the U.S. Olympic trials next month in Omaha. Former Ladue Soccer star Becky Sauerbrun will know by the first week of July if she'll officially be on Team USA's powerhouse women's soccer club. This week, KSDK profiled former Missouri Baptist University track standout Megan Hudson, who will try and qualify for the Steeplechase next month. Good luck to all three! Is there anyone else we should be keeping an eye on for a shot at the Games?
