ALDI "Overwhelmed" By Creve Coeur Response

The discount grocer is now open at New Ballas and Olive.

After a well-attended sample day on Tuesday, ALDI opened for business in Creve Coeur Wednesday and held a low-key ribbon cutting Thursday prior to opening for the day.  Rob Jeffries, a regional executive for the chain, told Patch he was "overwhelmed" by positive comments from shoppers in recent days who said they previously had to go to the grocer's location in University or Bridgeton. Thursday's brief ceremony did not involve city officials or the Creve Coeur-Olivette Chamber of Commerce.

Thank you to Aldi's for not having one of those worthless ribbon cuttings where politicians glomb onto something where they're not relevant. My $5 coupon is ready to be used this weekend. Thank you to Aldi's in Chesterfield, where I shopped until this store was built.   more ›

ALDI Brings In Crowd Ahead Of Opening Day

The discount grocer is now open in Creve Coeur. Use Patch's new tool to help find the best deals near you.

For the first time in several years, the parking lot at the corner of Olive Boulevard and New Ballas Road was packed in Creve Coeur Tuesday, one day ahead of ALDI's unofficial opening in the city on Wednesday. The store's "grand opening," complete with the requisite ribbon cutting, is set for Thursday morning. Use Patch To Find The Best Grocery Deals Around Creve Coeur Curious shoppers toured the store Wednesday, tasting food and taking home samples. Store officials say as many as 2,500 people have come to similar events at other stores, although a smaller amount was predicted here. "It's always been a good desirable market for us to get into and being that Creve Coeur is fairly populated with businesses, this one came available being a …

There is no need for the comma after "leaders." Use a comma before "and" if it separates two independent clauses. Since "our city leaders," does not contain a verb, it is unnecessary. Have a nice day.   more ›

ALDI Outlines Plans For May 2 Opening In Creve Coeur

The discount grocer says the location at New Ballas Road and Olive Boulevard will have "a new look."

The pace of construction has picked up at the site of the former Borders bookstore in Creve Coeur as crews work toward a May 2 grand opening of the newest ALDI grocery store. The store has had critics, who have concerns that the discount grocer's reputation doesn't match Creve Coeur's profile. The company says it will bring quality products and savings for customers, along with a "new look" for the grocer, according to a statement this week: "With higher ceilings, improved natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials – such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs – the store will offer customers a simple and easy-to-navigate shopping experience." The public is invited to an 8:30 a.m. ribbon…

Residents Rail Against Red Racks & ALDI Coming To Creve Coeur

Residents voiced their concerns during an informal gathering with Creve Coeur Mayor Barry Glantz Thursday.

A pair of businesses expected to open within the next few months in Creve Coeur have not exactly had the welcome mat extended by some city residents. Red Racks, a thrift store operated by Disabled American Veterans, could be open by Memorial Day, and ALDI, the discount grocer, will be opening in the former Borders bookstore space in early May. Creve Coeur officials have already voiced their disappointment with the fact that Red Racks, which operates as a non-profit, will not generate sales tax revenue at an intersection which was improved under a Transportation Development District (TDD) project under the premise of collecting sales tax revenue as a way of paying for a realigned street and a traffic light to improve safety. Customers at …

I can understand not wanting Red Racks as they don't generate any revenue for the city. Aldi's on the other hand is an awesome store. I can afford to shop wherever I want, but I choose Aldi's because I don't like wasting money when I can get a deal. I can see how a bunch of old snobs would label it lower class though, since historically it has been present in lower income neighborhoods. Creve …   more ›

ALDI Opening Pushed Back To May

The discount grocer plans to occupy part of the former Borders Bookstore site in Creve Coeur.

A spokeswoman representing ALDI has confirmed to Patch that the discount grocer's plans to open in Creve Coeur have beeen pushed back. In December, Patch reported that a March opening was planned. This week, she confirmed that the grand opening date was now set for May 2. Developers won city approval to subdivide the property to create two additional storefronts facing New Ballas Road. Patch is still working to confirm who will occupy those spaces. Late Thursday afternoon, the city building department confirmed that work on the ALDI portion of the building was in the drywall phase. The exterior of the building still shows the outlines of the former Borders signage and the Borders monument sign at the corner of Olive Boulevard and New …

City Panel Signs Off On Changes At Former Borders Site

Creve Coeur's Planning and Zoning Commission approves changes to make room for new tenants along with ALDI.

A plan by a developer to subdivide the former Borders Bookstore space is now in the hands of Creve Coeur's city council. Monday, the city's Planning and Zoning Commission approved a minor site development plan that will make changes to the northwest portion of the former Borders space. Last month, the discount grocer ALDI confirmed the intent to open in part of that space in March. If city council approves the proposal, which includes changing the elevation/ grade of the parking lot, it will create a 7500 square ft. space and an additional 2000 square ft. space, both facing North New Ballas Road. A representative for the property owner said FedEx would occupy the larger space. The shipping/office services outlet has 2 locations in Creve …

Well, I hate having to drive out of Creve Couer to find a great, locally-owned coffee shop. Starbucks is great, but smaller places can evolve into a community meeting space, which I think is pretty cool. As for wanting a restaurant, I feel that since Growler's left there's not a similar, casual place to go for a beer. Again- I'm a fan of smaller places, not chains. But that's just my preference. …   more ›

10 Creve Coeur Storylines We're Following In 2013

From the leadership change at Ladue Schools to the Senior PGA Championship at Bellerive, here's a look at some of the places and faces we're interested in as we head into 2013.

Welcome to 2013. I guess the Mayans were wrong, huh?  As we embark on a new year, here's a look at 10 storylines we'll be following. Think we've missed something? Tell us in the comment section. Creve Coeur faces a tricky balance of how to handle business and development interests with nearby residential concerns. The poster-child for that in 2012, Delmar Gardens' plan for Ladue Road near Interstate 270 figures to make news on that front again in 2013. The proposal, which received a negative recommendation from Creve Coeur Planning and Zoning officials, will be back before City Council members January 14.  A prominent vacant space figures to have a new tenant in March, when ALDI moves into part of the former Borders Bookstore at Olive …

ALDI Confirms Creve Coeur Grand Opening

The grocer had been rumored as having interest in coming to the city for much of the last year.

Patch has confirmed that discount grocer ALDI will open a Creve Coeur location in 2013 at the former Borders bookstore on Olive Boulevard. A spokeswoman for a PR firm representing the company said a March grand opening is planned. There had been talk last spring about the potential for a store at the intersection of Olive and New Ballas Road. Creve Coeur officials issued a building permit for work on the space back in October. A grocer fits into approved uses for the site, meaning the ALDI by itself would not require Planning and Zoning or City Council approval to move forward. City Planner Whitney Kelly told Patch Tuesday afternoon that the developer for the property does plan to subdivide the building, book-ending the grocer with a pair …
