De Smet Jesuit's Jimmy Barton led all scorers with 25 points.
The De Smet Jesuit Spartans, buoyed by a decided rebounding advantage on both ends of the court, defeated Hazelwood Central Friday in the championship game of the Ameritime Classic held at Missouri Baptist University. Spartan senior guard Jimmy Barton led all scorers with 25 points. Senior forward Marcus Hinton led the Hawks with 14. De Smet Jesuit switched to a zone defense early on and took advantage on the interior, with Nolan Berry swatting 4 first half shots and John Barron collecting 6 early points off the bench while also rebounding on both ends of the court. "Us rebounding really set the tempo the whole night tonight," Barton said, praising Barron. "When he goes to the offensive boards we’re a totally different team." The Spartans …

Spartans battle back to eventually tie, but run out of gas in tournament championship loss to high-flying Hawks.
Back on December 28, in the quarterfinal round of the Meramec Holiday Basketball Tournament, the De Smet boys basketball team handed Hazelwood Central its worst loss of the season up to that point – a 69-54 beatdown – that’s had the Hawks in an angry mood ever since. On Friday night, the teams met again, this time in the championship game of the Parkway West/Ameritime Classic Tournament at Missouri Baptist University. But this time, it was Hazelwood Central that earned itself a big-time win over De Smet, 67-54, to gain a measure of revenge. “Oh I think they were definitely ready for this one,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “I think they felt like clearly they weren’t all there back at Meramec. And I think they wanted to prove what…

Senior Zach Biggs had a game-high 24 points, but Colts ran out of gas after forcing overtime with furious fourth-quarter rally.
Coming off a pair of sensational wins over Ft. Zumwalt West and Seckman, the Parkway Central boys basketball team took a huge step up in competition Monday night, when it took on No. 9-ranked Hazelwood Central in a first round game at the Parkway West/Ameritime Classic Boys Basketball Tournament. The tournament is being held in Creve Coeur at Missouri Baptist University's Carl and Doris Petty Student Recreation Center The Colts, an 11-5 ballclub that’s flown under the hype-machine radar for most of the season, finally had a chance to make a name for itself, if only they could take down one of the teams some consider the best in the entire area. And as it turned out, Parkway Central nearly pulled it off, rallying from nine points down late …

Spartans were upset by Cadets in Meramec Tournament last week, but avenged that loss Friday.
A little over a week ago, the De Smet Jesuit High School boys basketball team – the same team that was ranked No. 1 in the area in most top 10 preseason basketball polls – suffered a mystifying 11-point loss to then-unranked rival CBC, in the semifinals of the Meramec Holiday Hoops Tournament. The hangover from that loss seemed to carry over to the next night, as De Smet lost the Meramec third-place game as well, and slipped all the way to No. 8 in the area in this week’s rankings. On Friday though, the Spartans looked like a team still angry about last week’s loss, as they completely dismantled CBC, by the score of 64-42, in a critical Metro Catholic Conference game at CBC’s D.C. Wilcutt Gymnasium. “It’s never fun to lose to CBC,” De Smet…
