Ladue Stays Red Hot With Blowout Win Over Bayless

Cornell Johnston scores 16 points, drops off nine assists, and grabs four steals to lead Rams to seventh win in a row.

Fresh off a pair of wins over highly-ranked CBC and much-less regarded Wentzville Holt, the Ladue High boys basketball team looked like it was in the mood for a much easier night when it took on Bayless High Wednesday night. The Rams, who have been a stalwart defensive club all season, came out of the locker room and played perhaps their best eight minutes of defense this entire season during in the first quarter, and held the visiting Bronchos to just two points, on their way to a comfortable 57-39 victory at home. Ladue, which has eased its way up to the No. 5 spot in the area Top 20 rankings, has now won seven straight ballgames dating back to the semifinals of the MICDS Holiday Tournament. Last week, the Rams had perhaps their best …

Last-Minute Heroics Leads Ladue To Monumental Upset Over No. 2 CBC

Rams get 20 points from Andrew Maddock, and 16 points from Cornell Johnston in 60-58 victory over Cadets in championship game of DC Wilcutt Tournament.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- From the moment he realized his team would be facing the No. 2 ranked team in all of St. Louis area basketball, in the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament, Ladue High head coach Chad Anderson preached the same mantra over and over again. "I told our kids (Thursday) at practice, and (Friday) before the game," said Anderson, "in order for us to win the big games, you've got to believe in yourself, number one. You've got to compete. And you've got to trust your teammates. And I think that is the difference in this team and the past teams we've had. These kids believe." Well, that belief became reality late Friday night, as Ladue earned its biggest win -- possibly ever -- in a stunning 60-58 nail-biter over the …

Johnston Outplays Glotta In Battle Of Top Point Guards To Lead Ladue Past Ft. Zumwalt North In Semifinals Of CBC Tournament

Ladue junior Cornell Johnston nets game-high 20 points, 11 assists and holds area-leading scorer Chaz Glotta to just 12 points in 65-50 victory that will send Rams to Friday night championship game against CBC.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- Back when the 2012-2013 area boys basketball schedule was announced, one of the most intriguing matchups on the slate was a showcase game at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout that would pit two of the area's best point guards against one another with Ladue's Cornell Johnston going up against Ft. Zumwalt North's Chaz Glotta. Johnston, the Rams' pass-happy junior who leads the area in assists (8.9 apg), was supposed to face perhaps his toughest individual matchup of the season going up against Glotta, Zumwalt North's junior shot machine, who leads the area in scoring (25.8 ppg). At the last minute though, the Ramey Shootout folks made a change and Zumwalt North wound up playing Riverview Gardens and Ladue played…

Ladue Boys Hoops Outlasts Whitfield Hoops In Rematch

Sophomore Cornell Johnston led the Rams with 16 points, including a deep three-pointer in overtime that gave Ladue the lead for good.

Sometimes when he gets the chance, Ladue sophomore point guard Cornell Johnston likes to fire up a deeper than average three-point attempt, just to let the defense know he can make those shots. It may seem like an unconventional move, especially at such a critical time, but Johnston and Ladue boys basketball coach Todd Basler both consider it effective. “I like to do that at crunch time sometimes,” Johnston said. “I hit those all the time in practice. So I figure it’s a shot I make all the time, I might as well take it.” And surprising as it might seem, Basler agrees. “He’s a 40 percent three-point shooter,” the coach said. “But he’s got great touch. And periodically, I’m OK with him taking that. He’s going to make them more than he’s …
