Former Blues netminder is getting ready for the upcoming NHL season.
What a difference a year makes. Last summer, former Chaminade goalie Ben Bishop was with his St. Louis Blues teammates in Joplin helping the community there recover from tornado devastation, ahead of a training camp duel with Brian Elliot for a goaltender's roster spot for 2011-2012. As we know now, Elliot won the spot and along with Jaroslav Halak, helped guide the Blues into the playoffs. Bishop, in a contract year, made the AHL All Star Team and was dealt to the Ottawa Senators at the trade deadline. Flash forward to the present. Bishop was a counselor at Chaminade's Youth Hockey Camp this week at the Hardees Iceplex in Chesterfield. Check out our Facebook photo gallery from the camp He's signed to a 1-way NHL contact in Ottawa, which …

Former Chaminade Red Devil earns American Hockey League All-Star MVP honors Monday.
If a goalie is looking to pad his stats, conventional wisdom would tell them to stay as far away from an All-Star hockey game as possible. Just ask St. Louis Blues netminder Brian Elliott, who participated in the NHL's All-Star contest Sunday as one of the best at his position in the sport and still gave up six goals on 19 shots in the third period, as Fox Sports Midwest's B.J. Rains reported. That may help lend some perspective to what Ben Bishop, the Blues' AHL All-Star goalie accomplished Monday night. Bishop, the former Chaminade Red Devil, made saves on 10 of 11 chances in the American Hockey League All-Star game and earned MVP honors. Despite those efforts, Bishop has been the topic of fan and media speculation as potential trade …

Ben Bishop knows his NHL time may have to come with another organization.
The St. Louis Blues have a good problem, if there are any, for a National Hockey League squad. They have not one, but two goalies who have performed so well since the hiring of new head coach Ken Hitchcock that the backup goalie at the season's start is heading to the NHL All-Star Game and last week was given a contract extension. Brian Elliot's opportunity has come at the expense of Ben Bishop, the former Chaminade netminder who spent time with the big club last season but who has put up all-star numbers of his own for Peoria in the American Hockey League. In a speech last week to the Creve Coeur-Olivette Chamber of Commerce, Blues CEO Mike McCarthy said Bishop is "ready for the NHL". Bishop is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the…

The goaltender who played his high school hockey in Creve Coeur helped spur a food drive to benefit the tornado-stricken town.
After realizing just how devastating the tornado that ripped through Joplin May 22 was, Ben Bishop wasted little time wondering what he could do to help those in need. Bishop, a goalie for the St. Louis Blues, and a former Chaminade student, immediately turned into a concerned citizen. So one morning while working out with his Blues teammates, Bishop got the ball rolling. "We were just working out one day and I was sitting there thinking what could we do because obviously we can do something," Bishop said. "So I called down to the Blues and asked if we could do a clothing drive or food drive. They called the United Way and they said they needed food. We were talking about maybe going down there (to Joplin) and helping out and they said …

The former Chaminade goaltender hopes to build on a promising 2010-2011 season.
Ben Bishop was hooked on pucks at an early age. His father got him started at the age of four after Bishop attended his first St. Blues hockey game. "My dad took me to a game at The Arena, and I told him I wanted to do that," Bishop said. "He got me skating when I was four. I started out at Kirkwood and there wasn't a roof or anything (at the Kirkwood Ice Rink). It was all outdoors and I started out there and just kind of worked my way up from that. "When you had those 5 a.m. practices and your toes were frozen, we all came off crying but it was definitely worth it," he said. The former Chaminade goaltender has now fulfilled a childhood dream of playing pro hockey in his hometown, with stints in the crease since the 2008-2009 season. …
