De Smet Jesuit's Nolan Berry Signs National Letter Of Intent With Butler

Wednesday is the first day senior basketball players can formalize their college choices.

More than a year after he first told the recruiting world about his verbal committment to play college basketball at Butler University, De Smet Jesuit Senior Forward Nolan Berry Wednesday used the first day he could to end the recruiting process by signing his National Letter of Intent. The 6-8 Power Forward shot up the recruiting charts following a breakout Sophomore season and impressive offseason showings on the AAU summer circuit last summer. He announced his verbal pledge last fall. De Smet Jesuit Head Coach Kevin Poelker said at the time Berry understood that a program like Butler's couldn't afford to wait for him for an extended recruitment. Like many other athletes who have gone through the process, Berry said Wednesday he was glad…

De Smet Gets Sweet Revenge With Rousing Win Over Rival CBC

Spartans were upset by Cadets in Meramec Tournament last week, but avenged that loss Friday.

A little over a week ago, the De Smet Jesuit High School boys basketball team – the same team that was ranked No. 1 in the area in most top 10 preseason basketball polls – suffered a mystifying 11-point loss to then-unranked rival CBC, in the semifinals of the Meramec Holiday Hoops Tournament. The hangover from that loss seemed to carry over to the next night, as De Smet lost the Meramec third-place game as well, and slipped all the way to No. 8 in the area in this week’s rankings. On Friday though, the Spartans looked like a team still angry about last week’s loss, as they completely dismantled CBC, by the score of 64-42, in a critical Metro Catholic Conference game at CBC’s D.C. Wilcutt Gymnasium. “It’s never fun to lose to CBC,” De Smet…

The Creve Coeur Patch Sports Year In Review

Nationwide attention for high school basketball, and prolific years for local wideouts were among the stories which dominated the sports headlines in 2011.

As 2011 draws to a close, Creve Coeur Patch is taking a look back at some of the biggest stories of the year in a variety of categories, and we want to know what you think, too. Here are three we picked out, in no particular order: Bradley Beal's Senior Season The Chaminade standout brought a close to one of the most storied high school basketball careers in St. Louis basketball history with a senior season filled with accolades and nationwide attention. He led the Red Devils to the state quarterfinals, averaging 32.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.7 steals per game. Normally, "all-everything" is little more than a lazy writer's platitude, but in this case, Beal literally fit the bill. He was the Gatorade Basketball Player of the …

De Smet junior standout gives verbal pledge to the school which has played in the last two NCAA Basketball Championship games.

Nolan Berry won't graduate from De Smet until the spring of 2013, but the Spartan standout forward knows where he wants to be in the fall of the same year. De Smet varsity basketball coach Kevin Poelker confirmed Berry has made a verbal pledge to play at Butler University. The move was first reported by HighSchoolSports.net. Poelker said Berry made the decision in person Sunday during a trip to the Indianapolis campus after he also made a visit to Boston College. We talked with Berry this afternoon. He told Patch that the visit to meet Butler's players was a big factor in his being able to make a decision now, even saying that a month ago he couldn't have seen himself making a decision. He also said "I don't see him leaving," of Butler head coach Brad Stevens. Stevens has become a hot commodity in the coaching business off of the team's run in the NCAA …   more ›
