Both teams are heading toward district play looking to wrap up the regular season strong.
Chaminade (15-8) defeated Metro Catholic Conference rival Vanney (16-8) Friday night, as the Red Devils closed out conference play, defeating the Griffins 58-47 at home in Creve Coeur, in a game broadcast on the Chaminade Sports Programming Network. Senior guard Andy Kleinlein got Chaminade out in front early, with 9 first quarter points en route to a game high 19 for the Red Devils. Freshman Jayson Tatum added 17 points and 7 rebounds, Head Coach Kelvin Lee tweeted afterward. The game hovered around a six point margin for most of the game. A Vianney basket early in the fourth quarter by Sean O'Brien cut the Chaminade lead to 44-43, but the game would be no closer down the stretch. The CBC Cadets will try to prove Friday night that you can defeat the same opponent three times in a single season when they take their 14-4 record on the road to Chaminade for a Metro Catholic Conference clash against the Red Devils. The Red Devils are coming off a big win Friday against De Smet Jesuit.
The Chaminade Red Devils were back on the court Tuesday, following Friday's hard fought win against the De Smet Jesuit Spartans. Only 10 days earlier, Chaminade defeated the Spartans on a Jayson Tatum buzzer beater on the Red Devils home court. Tuesday night, Chaminade hosted Lutheran North, ahead of an anticipated matchup with conference rival CBC. The teams played to a 48-48 tie in regulation, with North missing what appeared to be an open jumper from near the three point arc. In overtime, Tatum had the ball again, with just under 5 seconds left with the game tied at 54. The Chaminade Freshman hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to defeat De Smet Jesuit.
Chaminade Varsity Basketball Coach Kelvin Lee was careful to say prior to the season that Jayson Tatum is not Bradley Beal. Tatum can play four spots on the floor, while Beal was always the shooter. Tatum has drawn the attention of Division I scouts ahead of Beal's pace, many of the same schools are once again beating down the door at Chaminade to catch a glimpse. Beal went to Florida. The Gators have been by to see the Freshman Tatum twice in the last two months, the latest on Friday, according to media tweets. Monday, Beal hit a game-winner for the Washington Wizards over the Oklahoma City Thunder. A freshman class trio, led by Jayson Tatum, arrives to help reinvigorate the 2012-2013 squad.
When Kelvin Lee looked to his bench last season, he didn't have a lot to work with in the 2011-2012 campaign. Coming off a season where a Bradley Beal-led squad reached the state quarterfinals, the Red Devils slumped to 9-17 last season. Lee doesn't expect to have last season's trouble with depth or the team's won-loss record as play tipped off Monday. Chaminade opened on the road against Pattonville and defeated the Pirates 56-37, led by 16 points from power forward Jayson Tatum. Lee's Red Devils have reloaded in a big way, led by the Freshman Tatum, who scored an invitation to try out for one of Team USA's junior squads after an impressive summer hoops camp showing.
