Basketball fans won’t want to miss a day filled with premier high school basketball games to benefit a cause that’s close to so many. The American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer® Shootout presented by Ameren Missouri is set for Thursday, January 31 at Scottrade Center. Area high school coaches and volunteers of the American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer program have teamed up to plan the event which will benefit research, education, advocacy and free patient services for our local communities. The De Smet graduate was a member of the 1973 boys basketball team that won a state championship. He died Sunday after a battle with rectal colon cancer.
Wednesday 12:45 a.m. Update: According to information posted on Legacy.com via The St. Louis Post Dispatch, a memorial service for Jim Goessling will be held Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at De Smet Jesuit, following visitation which starts at 10 a.m., also at the school. Original Story: Word surfaced Monday morning that Jim Goessling, a member of the 1973 state title basketball team at De Smet who went on to a career as a dealmaker in the world of sports and radio in St. Louis, died Sunday. Thursday night, thousands of screaming Missouri and Illinois basketball fans cheered their teams in downtown St. Louis in a game that has now become a part of the fabric of the bi-state region's sports history. The Braggin' Rights game has taken on a bigger meaning for the region because it is played on neutral turf, first at The Arena, before moving onto the new Kiel Center, later renamed the Scottrade Center.
