Creve Coeur Man Abandons Mt. Everest Climb

Joe Ashkar's goal was to reach the world's tallest peaks and the north and south poles in a single calendar year.

Updated with new information: Joe Ashkar is en route for the North Pole after an aborted attempt to climb Mt. Everest. Ashkar, a Creve Coeur resident, posted the following statement to his website Tuesday. "Friends, family and loved ones: first and foremost, I would like to thank everyone for the amazing support and encouragement during my quest to climb the 7 Summits and this past Everest Expedition. As my good friend Ed Viesturs and one of the greatest mountaineers of all time once said: “Getting to the top is optional. Getting down is mandatory.” With that thought in mind, I decided to turn back and abandon expedition of summiting Mount Everest. I truly never recovered from the sinus/respiratory infection I suffered early on and by the …

Orchard Lakes Residents To Learn More About Proposed Buyout Plan

A developer has asked to speak at a meeting of residents from the Orchard Lakes subdivision Wednesday night.

Residents of a subdivision sitting on prime territory between Creve Coeur and Maryland Heights in St. Louis County could begin to get some more details Wednesday from the latest developer proposing to buy them out in favor of a retail project. As Patch reported last week, The Devereux Company has sent letters to residents in the Orchard Lakes subdivision indicating an interest in making "generous offers" worth more than the value of homes in the hope of building a "multi-anchor-based retail shopping plaza." Dan Devereux asked subdivision representatives for a chance to address an annual meeting of the residents set for Wednesday night in Maryland Heights. Devereux representatives have not returned multiple phone calls seeking comment on …

Hearing Wednesday For Residents To Talk Trash With City Officials

Creve Coeur is in the process of evaluating options ahead of the expiration of the existing contract for trash services.

The public is invited to the last scheduled meeting where Creve Coeur officials hope to hear what residents want in the city's next contract for trash collection. The current deal expires next summer. An earlier forum on the subject attracted approximately 20 residents, primarily city elected leaders and committee members. One of the city's big issues with trash collection now is that Creve Coeur's current contract covers the collection of rear-yard trash, which is more expensive, but is not utilized by a majority of city residents. Some at the previous forum contend that their tax dollars shouldn't subsidize someone else's more expensive service, which is currently available at no extra cost to residents. Bob, flyoverland is hardly Donna Dill. Donna Dill on the best day of her life couldn't achieve the success flyoverland could make on the worst day of his. Truthfully, I now prefer flyoverland's behind-the-scenes method. It has better success in Creve Coeur led by blind eyes and deaf ears. Nothing like a surprise blindside to open up the hole to daylight.   more ›

Food Trucks In Creve Coeur: City Looks For More Info

One member of the city's Planning and Zoning Commission suggested a temporary ordinance that would show just how food trucks would impact Creve Coeur.

The arguments for and against food trucks have been fairly well-laid out in the St. Louis area in recent years. They're popular and trendy, but will they hurt brick and mortar businesses, or get away without paying sales tax? The debate has crept into Creve Coeur in the last year, and Monday, city leaders conceded that they don't know enough about how those assumptions would actually play out here. Food trucks are allowed in Creve Coeur as a conditional use which would have to be permitted, or as a catering outlet. To date, the city has not issued any permits for them. Debbie Blanchard, of CenterCo Office Suites, told the Planning and Zoning Commission Monday that she questioned the idea of paying a $200 permit for a truck selling food at…

I think that food trucks and food truck events can be a draw to a commercial area. I recently attended a food truck day at a park in St. Charles and lots of people stayed and shopped afterward.   more ›

Message From The Mayor: New Council, New Challenges Ahead

Creve Coeur Mayor Barry Glantz writes about challenges moving forward after April's elections and a way to get involved with the city in June.

The following is republished with permission from the city of Creve Coeur's May newsletter. Congratulations to newly elected City Council representatives Cynthia Kramer (Ward 1) and Dr. Ellen Lawrence (Ward 2), and re-elected representatives Charlotte D’Alfonso (Ward 3) and Dr. Scott Saunders (Ward 4); I share the confidence expressed by the voters and look forward to working with the entire City Council!  Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” A year ago (in my first mayoral column), I talked about the shoes I had to fill, and those that I had worn out. I have learned so much, including that the privilege of being mayor is not a destination, but rather an…

Yes, we can afford to lose Mark Perkins. No one is irreplaceable. Albert Pujols wasn't irreplaceable. This award is no big deal, it's an association award given by his peers.and serves as an industry self-pats-on-the-back. t's what taxpayers think and there are a ton of taxpayers who don't like the way the city is run in secrecy.   more ›
