Rockhurst Defeats De Smet Jesuit in Coaches vs Cancer Shootout

First meeting of the cross-state rivals since the state tournament in 2000.

A nine point loss (75-66) was not quite what Kevin Poelker and his De Smet Jesuit Spartans had in mind, facing rival Rockhurst of Kansas City in the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at the Scottrade Center today. The two schools last met in Columbia in the state semifinals with DeS met winning in double overtime 14 years ago. The State Line Road boys had other plans. "A win sure means a nicer bus ride home," said the Hawklettes coach Mark Nussbaum. "After the first few possessions, I think we did a nice job of putting some different defenses on them," said Nussbaum. Kyle Wolf, just now going through the recruiting process, led The Rock with 21 points and 12 rebounds. His counterpart, senior forward Nolan Berry, who is going to Butler is just …

Quarterbacks get chance to air it out during this inaugural football tournament at De Smet.

A 7-on-7 football tournament is the perfect opportunity to showcase quarterbacks. There were plenty on display Saturday at De Smet Jesuit High School. The St. Louis Metropolitan Football Coaches Association held its inaugural 7-on-7 tourney at De Smet with 23 teams from Missouri and Illinois participating. Top area quarterbacks, such as Dalton Demos of Christian Brothers College, Gateway Tech’s Paul Rice, Ladue’s Brandon Carr, De Smet’s Conner Harrison, Fort Zumwalt West’s Drew Hare and Lindbergh’s Peter Simpson all aired it out without having to worry about getting hit by an oncoming rush. The tournament was two-hand touch, played without pads and had no rushing attempts. “The biggest thing is that the quarterbacks get work,” De Smet …

"It's always tough to play teams in our Metro Division because we have to face each team three times," Chaminade head coach Matt Hrubes said. "Tonight our seniors stepped up and this will no doubt help us prepare for the Challenge Cup in a few weeks." Those seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony Patrick Kesterson, Alex Johnson, Matt Mollerus, and Nate Kohenhoefer were introduced and skated out with roses for their mothers. Coming off the excitement of the pregame …

Red Devils Skate By Spartans

Clutch goaltending, tough defense and all-around scoring helps Chaminade hockey prevail in a Metro Division contest.

The Chaminade Red Devils notched its first win of 2011 with an impressive 5-0 shutout against rival De Smet Monday at Queeny Park. The win was their eighth overall and the fourth in the strong Metro Division. It also allows them to climb within two points of 2nd place SLUH. Chaminade was led by the goaltending of junior Jordan Hathaway, who stopped all 29 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season and fifth win overall.   The first period was scoreless, dominated by Chaminade's offense which was a direct result of the team's work on defense. Adam and Justin Roeders and Grant Fredric had strong overall games and helped keep the puck in De Smet's end of the ice most of the game. The first goal came at 12:11 of the second period, an …
