Second-Half Surge Sends Chaminade to Class 5, District 2 Basketball Title

Tatum Time, just in time. Jayson Tatum, the much talked about freshman sensation at Chaminade was mostly silent in the first half of the Class 5, District 2 championship game before a packed house at Ladue Friday night. Tatum scored just two points in the opening half. But he was a scoring machine in the last 16 minutes and hit 10 of 14 free throws in the closing minutes to lead Chaminade (18-8) over Ladue (21-6) 64-55 to collect the first-place hardware. Nothing came as a surprise to Red Devil coach Kelvin Lee. “Jayson played like a freshman in the first half,” said Lee, moments after the first-place trophy was hoisted. Winner Take All for Chaminade at Ladue Friday Night

District tournament finals on Rams home floor features two high-flying teams. Plan on arriving early.

The Class 5, District 2 championship game, Chaminade at Ladue Friday night is 24 hours away, and Rams’ coach Chad Anderson is already totally amped. He expects great things, especially when playing on their brand new home maple floor. For the first time in some 15 years, the Rams were able to host a district championship. The event has gone off flawless to date. In the semifinals, Ladue came out firing and smothered St. Louis U. High 67-51. In the other semifinal match, Chaminade evened the record with Riverview Gardens for the season 1-1 with an 82-56 whipping. Both games were played Tuesday night at Ladue. Pattonville goal scoring dynamo Kailey Utley admitted late in Friday's MSHSAA Class 3 District 5 girls soccer championship game, that she sometimes uses an unusual tactic when she makes her move toward the opposing goal. "Sometimes I close my eyes, and the ball just goes in," is what Utley told teammates who were congratulating her after she scored for the third time in the Pirates district title game showdown against rival Hazelwood West, at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex. The other Pattonville players laughed when Utley said that, and it's a pretty good bet that she was just joking.
