Big Night Of Local Hoops Includes Doubleheader At MICDS, Ladue In Championship Game At CBC

Bombers' and Rams' boys and girls will begin the night with double-dip at McDonnell, while No. 7 Ladue hopes to play giant-killer against No. 2 CBC.

The first big night of the high school hoops season comes tonight, with a trio of big ballgames featuring some of the best teams from the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area. On a city-wide scale, most eyes will be trained on the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament out at CBC High School in Town and Country, where the Ladue High boys will take on the No. 2-ranked CBC Cadets at 8 p.m. CBC was the area's preseason No. 1, with at least three top college prospects on their roster, including 6'7 swingman Jordan Barnett, 6'6 power forward Ray Doby, and 6'6 shooting guard Patrick McCaw. The Cadets lost their No. 1 ranking after falling in the championship game of the Meramec Tournament to Hazelwood Central back on December 30. Since then, …

Ladue Knocks Off Previously Unbeaten No. 8 Ritenour To Win Holiday Tournament Championship

Senior Elizabeth Greenberg came up huge for Ladue by making 13 of 16 free throws, including seven in the final minute of a 52-44 Ram victory over the Huskies.

OVERLAND -- If there’s one thing Ladue girls basketball coach Cord Dockery is certain of through the first half of the season when it come to his team, is that the Rams will always play up or down to their competition. Two weeks ago, Ladue was on a --game winning streak, but still managed to play one of its worst games of the season in a loss to 1-5 Notre Dame. But on other occasions against much better competition, the Rams have played extremely well and brought home wins against teams like Summit, Whitfield, Parkway West and Confluence. That trend continued on Friday afternoon in the championship game of the newly-minted Ritenour Holiday Tournament, as Ladue delivered a superb performance from start to finish, to claim a 52-44 tournament…

Crunch Time Defensive Plays, Jump Shot By McNichols Lift Ladue Past DuBourg In Tourney Semifinal At Ritenour

Rams will play host school in championship final, after getting past DuBourg in hard-fought early afternoon tussle.

OVERLAND -- For the first 30 minutes of Thursday's Ritenour Holiday Tournament game against Bishop DuBourg, Ladue High girls basketball coach Cord Dockery tried just about every trick in the book to get his Rams to dig in and play defense like he knew they could. Dockery called different defenses; he called several timeouts to set up the defensive possession like he wanted; he even played some unusual lineup combinations to hopefully get the Rams to dig in. In the final two minutes, the coach finally found a strategy that would work -- he challenged his crew to show what kind of guts they had. Dockery must have yelled the phrase "it's gut-check time" 20 or 30 times (probably wasn't really that many), but the point was clear, the coach …

Late Rally Falls Short, As Ladue Suffers Girls Hoops Loss To Notre Dame

Sophomores Cate Meyer and Kaitlynn Walker combined for 27 points and several big buckets for the Rams, but it wasn't enough to overcome Notre Dame's red-hot shooting from three-point land.

After losing star center Taylor Robinson at the beginning of December for an issue head coach Cord Dockery described as "personal time", the Ladue High girls basketball team has had to re-work its strategy and philosophy the last few weeks, at what for most teams would be the worst possible time -- right smack dab in the middle of the season. And with no definite idea when to expect the return of Robinson, a 6-foot-3 Temple University recruit who averaged 20 points and nine rebounds a game last season, Ladue has had only a few practices and even fewer games to try to figure out just how to play without her. Last week, it seemed like the Rams might've figured some things out, as they picked up two big wins over John Burroughs and Parkway …

Furious Rally Lifts Pattonville Girls Hoops To Comeback Win On Hazelwood West’s ‘Red-Out Night’

The visiting Pirates come back from 12-point deficit to pull out remarkable 71-70 win over Wildcats.

The night started out as one of mutual celebration for both the Hazelwood West and Pattonville girls basketball teams in a charity game for heart disease. But the never-ending fight to promote heart health and awareness turned into a heart-stopping, instant classic of a ballgame, as the Wildcats and Pirates waged an epic battle that came down to the final whistle. Host Hazelwood West, which delivered one of its finest efforts of the season, led almost from the start Friday, and even went up by as many as 12 points late in the fourth quarter. But the visitors from Pattonville showed just how much heart they have as well, by rallying to outscore the Wildcats 21-8 in the final four minutes to pull off an incredible 71-70 comeback win against …

Lady Pirates Win Non-Leage Hoops Matchup With Ladue

Kristen Hanna paced the Pattonville squad in a 46-40 win Friday.

Sometimes girls basketball teams don’t get the respect they deserve. Far too often, good girls basketball is played before sparse crowds. That’s hardly the case in the friendly confines of the Lady Pirates of Pattonville. An enthusiastic crowd came to cheer the home towners to a hard-fought 46-40 win over visiting Ladue Friday. The event had all the trappings with a red-hot pep band, a large number of cheerleaders and all kinds of gymnasts in green and black outfits. It was a night of fun in Pattonville’s gym. Senior forward Kristen Hanna led the way with 14 points. Mikala McGhee added 13. “For the most part, we’re happy how we played. We were sloppy at times, but the crowd was good and we fed off of that,” said Hanna. The game went back …

Pattonville Pirate Girls Basketball Season Comes To An End

Lady Pirates can't advance past Hazelwood West in district playoffs.

The Pattonville Lady Pirates season came to an end Thursday, as the team fell in district semifinal play against Hazelwood West in a game played at De Smet High School.  The Pirates could not contain Mia Williams at her best, drilling home a career-high six three-pointers for a game-high 18 points to lead Hazelwood West to a 61-47 win over the Lady Pirates. “She was on fire,” West head coach Jim Fleming said. “She’s a classic streaky shooter. When she gets going, she’s unbelievable. She’ll hit everything from back there.” Williams didn’t hit everything Thursday night, but she was pretty doggone close, knocking down six-of-eight three-point attempts, and taking advantage of a sagging Pattonville defense, which was trying to clog the lane to…

Whitfield Girls Force Overtime, Get Win Against Principia

Warriors win dramatic conference game.

Whitfield used the momentum from Stephanie Anderson's game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation to push past Principia 50-45 Tuesday night, Jan. 25 at Whitfield. The win puts the Warriors at 8-4 overall and 1-1 in conference. The game was the first conference loss for the Panthers, who are now 12-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Whitfield began the fourth quarter down 32-35, which was quickly 32-37. The Warriors patiently worked their way back to a 42-40 lead with 1:51 left. Foul shots gave the Panthers a 45-42 lead with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Whitfield passed the ball in and found Anderson open at nearly half-court. “We obviously knew Stephanie was going to get the ball at the end of the game,” Whitfield coach Deidre…

Westminster Lady Wildcats Spring Upset on MICDS

Boyd has career night in home win.

Westminster Christian sophomore Jabri Boyd entered Monday night's game against undefeated MICDS having scored 11 points for the entire season. Boyd equaled that total in the fourth quarter alone and did so in a very tight game. She finished with a game-high 18 points as the Wildcats upset the Rams, 47-41, in an MWAA Red Conference game at Westminster. "We have a pretty deep team and I have told all of the girls to be ready, that they will have a chance," Westminster coach Steve Stipanovich said. "Jabri has had some good practices recently where she really got after it and she played well in our last game against Visitation. "She really responded to the challenge tonight and gave us a huge lift in a game in which points were tough to come …
