Creve Coeur Soccer Coach Gets Hall Of Fame Induction Saturday

De Smet Jesuit's Greg Vitello is part of the inaugural Hall of Fame Class for the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association.

The St. Louis area's heritage as a high school soccer hotbed will be on full display Saturday, when the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association inducts the organization's first hall of fame class Saturday, and the Metro Catholic Conference will take center stage. De Smet Jesuit's Greg Vitello, CBC's Terry Michler, Mike Villa of Vianney are part of the class, as are the late Ebbie Dunn of SLUH and Bob Horgan of CBC. "It means a whole lot, especially with the group of individuals being inducted," Vitello said Thursday, noting that he grew up in coaching with many of them. Vitello has been a De Smet Jesuit coaching fixture in soccer, baseball, football and other sports since 1968. He says he's tried to be fair and consistent, …

De Smet Baseball Claims Win In Slugfest Over Chaminade

Junior Brandon Gutzler was 4-for-4 with four RBI to pace Spartans' biggest offensive output of the young season.

Even though the new high school baseball season is barely two weeks old, one thing is clear about the 2012 Chaminade and De Smet ballclubs -- their hitters are already in mid-season form. At least it sure seemed that way when the Red Devils and Spartans met in a Metro Catholic Conference game at De Smet Wednesday afternoon. The two clubs combined for 23 hits, including nearly a dozen extra-base hits, in an old-fashioned MCC slugfest, which the home team Spartans eventually claimed by the final score of 8-5. "We put the ball in play today, and we moved guys around," De Smet Head Coach Greg Vitello said. "But that doesn't always happen. I kind of thought our base-running kind of got us going a little bit today." De Smet was aggressive in …

State Soccer: Priory, De Smet Bound For Blue Springs

Rebels are 25-0, and look to close out a second perfect season in school history, while Spartans will be seeking their first state title since 1997.

Saturday afternoon proved to be an exciting one for a pair of local boys soccer teams with state championship dreams, as both the Priory and De Smet Jesuit squads earned trips to their respective state tournament Final Fours, with home victories over St. Dominic and Francis Howell. Priory kicked off the winning afternoon with a 2-0 decision over St. Dominic, while De Smet held off Howell in a 1-0 thriller at Pierre LaBarge Stadium. “It was an absolutely fantastic team effort,” Priory head coach John Mohrmann said. “We created a lot of chances, but sometimes in these kind of games, the ball doesn’t go in. And you just have to keep playing and keep plugging, and not let down.” And that’s exactly what the Rebels did, after narrowly missing on…

Third Time Is No Charm For CBC: De Smet Wins District Soccer Crown

The Spartans head to the state soccer tournament Tuesday.

Beating any team three times in a single season is tough. And in a conference game or against a heated rival, it's even more unlikely. You know your opponents almost as well as you know yourself. By that logic, the sports law of averages was bound to be in De Smet's favor heading to the pitch against CBC Wednesday, having lost 2-1 in September and then again in penalty kicks last month. But that only served to stir a crazed scene of celebration on the field Wednesday after De Smet ended CBC's hopes for a state title with a 2-1 overtime win for the District 2 crown. De Smet Senior Scott Russo put the ball in the net past CBC Junior keeper Nathaniel Griffin with 6:30 left in the first overtime period, sending the Spartans on to the state …
