Candidates Make Closing Argument In Council Races

Few sparks flew Friday at a League of Women Voters-sponsored candidate forum at the Creve Coeur Government Center.

With just over a week left until voters go to the polls in local municipal elections, candidates for Creve Coeur's City Council seats are starting to make their closing arguments. At a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters Friday night, four candidates played "15 questions" in front of a few dozen city residents at the Creve Coeur Government Center. During the hour and a half event, Ward 1 candidates David Caldwell and Cynthia Kramer, Ward 2 candidate Ellen Lawrence and Ward 4 candidate Scott Saunders answered questions on topics related to attracting new businesses, how to manage the city's budget surplus and other issues. Ward 2 candidate Jay Steinback and Ward 3 candidate Charlotte D'Alfonso were unable to attend. D'Alfonso and …

flyoverland, that's great. I can't help think about Kramer's no answer in the forum about modifying the city's comprehensive plan. She dropped the ball! She said she wanted specifics. Well, that's what residents want out of the comprehensive plan, they want specifics! Caldwell's answer to it was perfect, get rid of the uncertainty in it. Every project creates new rules, etc. Look at Delmar …   more ›

Rothman Furniture Owner Jay Steinback Seeking Ward 2 Council Seat

Steinback, 34, is one of 2 candidates to file for the seat up for election in April.

When Jay Steinback went in front of Creve Coeur's City Council last fall to present the concerns his family business had about the city's new sign code, he had no idea that a few months later he'd be a candidate for the panel himself. Last Monday, Steinback, the 34 year-old owner of Rothman Furniture, filed to run for the Ward 2 council seat up for election in April. Tara Nealey has decided not to run for re-election, and Steinback said she approached him about stepping forward. "I felt that there wasn't any good representation for businesses obviously on city council not from any lack of them wanting to be pro-business but from just lack of experience of what a business owner deals with on a day-to-day basis," Steinback told Patch. Jay Steinback was pretty clear Monday night. If his company, Rothman Furniture, knew coming in that it would not be able to put a sign on a mattress store in Creve Coeur facing traffic on Olive Boulevard, the company would have found another location. The Steinback family wanted signage fronting 11353 Olive, and facing Westbound traffic on the busy street, at the store's entrance. Under the original proposed plan, it would have been entitled to one sign on the building, and could have a second sign, but only in a window, something Steinback said…
