New CBC Hoops Coach Justin Tatum: Jayson Tatum Staying At Chaminade

The Cadet alum returns to the fold, talking about challenging his new team, replacing a mentor, and his own son's future.

A week after being announced as the school's new varsity boys basketball coach, 1997 graduate Justin Tatum sat down with Patch for a one-on-one interview Thursday afternoon. Tatum was hired to replace Bob McCormack, another CBC graduate who was on the bench for 17 years, including Tatum's team as a senior which won a state title. McCormack's coaching contract was not renewed after the Cadets, with a team featuring three future Division I caliber players, fell in the district championship game to rival De Smet Jesuit after losing to the Spartans a week earlier. Tatum comes to the school from a successful stint at Soldan High School in the PSL, where he was also Athletic Director. It’s tough," Tatum said of replacing McCormack, who was just …

Basketball fans wondering if we'd see a third Chaminade-De Smet Jesuit matchup this season will not get that opportunity. Chaminade Head Coach Kelvin Lee said prior to the game that he liked his team's chances because of his big men inside, and in this season of freshmen making an impact, Wednesday was Tyler Cook's turn, with 17 points off the bench. He and fellow freshman Jayson Tatum led the Red Devils in scoring. STLhighschoolsports.com's David Kvidahl has the complete game story.  The key play of the game came …

Jayson Tatum scores 14 of his 16 points in the second half. Chaminade beats Ladue, 64-55.

Tatum Time, just in time. Jayson Tatum, the much talked about freshman sensation at Chaminade was mostly silent in the first half of the Class 5, District 2 championship game before a packed house at Ladue Friday night. Tatum scored just two points in the opening half. But he was a scoring machine in the last 16 minutes and hit 10 of 14 free throws in the closing minutes to lead Chaminade (18-8) over Ladue (21-6) 64-55 to collect the first-place hardware. Nothing came as a surprise to Red Devil coach Kelvin Lee. “Jayson played like a freshman in the first half,” said Lee, moments after the first-place trophy was hoisted. In the second half, he nailed 18 points, wiping out a Ladue first-half 15-5 lead. Ladue found some tough going before …
