Creve Coeur Soccer Coach Celebrated For Sportsmanship

John Mohrmann will be honored this weekend for a decision in a game against Westminster Christian Academy last season which could have cost his team a shot at a state title.

The St. Louis Priory varsity soccer program achieved perfection in the 2011, going 27-0 en route to a state title. But that's not why the team's coach will be honored Saturday night by the St. Louis Sports Commission's National Sportsmanship Awards. Instead it will be because of a decision John Mohrmann made that could have ended his team's season in district play against Westminster Christian Academy. The story was first reported by West Newsmagazine Here's how it was described by the St. Louis Sports Commission: (You can also watch video of the play in question here) Last November, soccer rivals Saint Louis Priory School and Westminster Christian Academy were locked in a battle for their district championship. State Soccer: Priory, De Smet Bound For Blue Springs

Rebels are 25-0, and look to close out a second perfect season in school history, while Spartans will be seeking their first state title since 1997.

Saturday afternoon proved to be an exciting one for a pair of local boys soccer teams with state championship dreams, as both the Priory and De Smet Jesuit squads earned trips to their respective state tournament Final Fours, with home victories over St. Dominic and Francis Howell. Priory kicked off the winning afternoon with a 2-0 decision over St. Dominic, while De Smet held off Howell in a 1-0 thriller at Pierre LaBarge Stadium. “It was an absolutely fantastic team effort,” Priory head coach John Mohrmann said. “We created a lot of chances, but sometimes in these kind of games, the ball doesn’t go in. And you just have to keep playing and keep plugging, and not let down.” And that’s exactly what the Rebels did, after narrowly missing on…

Another Win Another Shutout for Priory Soccer Team

The Rebels blank MICDS 5-0 Wednesday in a Metro League contest at MICDS.

The Priory soccer team has played 11 games this season. The Rebels have won them all and have given up just one goal all season. They recorded their 10th shutout of 2011 Wednesday in a convincing 5-0 Metro League victory over MICDS. "We are strong all over the field and everybody defends," Priory coach John Mohrmann said of the key to the tremendous defensive record. "It keeps the pressure off the backs and the keeper." Rebel senior sweeper Kyle Martin is often without a lot of work during a game. "There are times that 20 or 25 minutes go by and I don't touch the ball," said Martin, who has started on the varsity since he was a freshman. "Our motto this year is "fierce" and that is the way we play defensively from the forwards all the way …

Priory Soccer Rolls With Shutout of Rival John Burroughs

A two-goal burst just before halftime lifts the Rebels to 3-0 win over the Bombers.

In a season full of dominant performances, Priory delivered perhaps its best effort of the entire season on Wednesday afternoon. The Rebels notched a 3-0 win over Metro Soccer League rival John Burroughs at the new varsity soccer field at Priory High School. “We played pretty sharp,” Priory head coach John Mohrmann said. “One of my worries about this team is we’re making the right choices some of the time, but we’re not making those choices quickly enough. Today, I thought there were spells where we did that very well.” It seemed like a full 80 minutes of making the right choices, as the Rebels controlled the action right from the outset and never really let John Burroughs find its footing. The Bombers did manage to keep the game scoreless…
