The two schools will face eachother twice over a 16-day span.
On the night the De Smet Jesuit Basketball squad honored the memory of a key member of the school's first state basketball title team, the Spartans (4-1) defeated St. Charles West 54-45 in a game that might have been right up the alley for a player like the late Jim Goessling. Goessling, was a "glue guy" who hustled for rebounds, knew how to clutch and grab, the player who did the dirty work as Jim Kennedy led the '73 team to a title. He passed away after a roughly two year battle with colo-rectal cancer in October. Read: He Lived The Life of 5 People: Celebrating the life of Jim Goessling Tuesday night, after the Spartans peeled off their #35 JRG warmup jerseys that they'll wear the rest of the season in Goessling's honor, the teams …

The senior-laden squad is 2-0 after a win over Cardinal Ritter in the Whitfield Tournament.
"Someone has to step up." It may be one of if not the most overrused statements in the sporting world, but if it has ever applied, it has in recent weeks at De Smet Jesuit, as the Spartans have dealt with the loss of injured forward Nolan Berry. Berry, the 6-8 star who signed a letter of intent to play at Butler University earlier this month, broke both of his arms in preseason practice November 20, meaning the team will be missing its 6th all-time leading scorer for an extended period of time. Read: De Smet Jesuit's Nolan Berry Out With Two Fractured Arms How long is still an open question. Coach Kevin Poelker praised Berry's "fire" in wanting to get back as soon as possible---he's already doing therapy-- but the earliest anything figures…

The Parkway North guards out-shoot De Smet, as Viking standout Darrell Johnson is held to 12.
Parkway North’s hot-shooting guards came through to put down top-seeded, defending Class 5 District 4 champs, De Smet. The No. 2 seed Vikings downed the Spartans 57-46 to claim the district title Friday night at Parkway Central. Viking junior guard Aaron Hines was game-high with 19 points, and sophomore Edin Bracic had 10. They came through when 6-8 Viking forward Darrell Johnson was kept in check by De Smet’s big forwards. “The difference was our guards,” Johnson said. “They shot well. We worked the offense. We played together a lot.” De Smet senior Eric Moeller (6-11) and junior Nolan Berry (6-8) kept Johnson to four points in the first half. Viking coach Russell Vincent wasn’t concerned. “We knew he was going to get his,” he said. “Once…

Four Spartans net double-figure scoring totals in 72-52 district semifinal win over Hazelwood West.
CHESTERFIELD – The De Smet boys basketball team earned the right to defend its 2011 district championship, Wednesday evening at Parkway Central High School, with a convincing 72-52 MSHSAA Class 5 District 4 semifinal win over Hazelwood West. The Spartans, the No. 7 ranked team in the area and clear favorites to win their second straight district title, took control of Wednesday’s contest with a 15-4 run late in the second quarter that turned a close ballgame against the Wildcats into a 10-point halftime advantage for De Smet. And despite Hazelwood West’s best efforts to cut into that edge, the Wildcats never could get close enough to really challenge the Spartans’ superiority. “I was really proud,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “…

Junior big man Nolan Berry drops 36 points and grabs 11 rebounds in Spartans sensational OT win over Hawks.
On a night when his team needed every ounce of scoring and playmaking he could possibly give them, De Smet High junior Nolan Berry delivered in a big way for the Spartans, Tuesday night, in their third matchup this season against Hazelwood Central. Berry, possibly the area’s best talent from the 2013 graduating class, poured in a career-high 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead De Smet to a spine-tingling, 68-62 overtime win over the visiting Hawks. “That was fun,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “When you get two good teams together like that, you’re going to get good games, and I thought both teams played well. I’m just glad our guys were able to play a little better.” Which they were able to do mostly because of another …

Spartans battle back to eventually tie, but run out of gas in tournament championship loss to high-flying Hawks.
Back on December 28, in the quarterfinal round of the Meramec Holiday Basketball Tournament, the De Smet boys basketball team handed Hazelwood Central its worst loss of the season up to that point – a 69-54 beatdown – that’s had the Hawks in an angry mood ever since. On Friday night, the teams met again, this time in the championship game of the Parkway West/Ameritime Classic Tournament at Missouri Baptist University. But this time, it was Hazelwood Central that earned itself a big-time win over De Smet, 67-54, to gain a measure of revenge. “Oh I think they were definitely ready for this one,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “I think they felt like clearly they weren’t all there back at Meramec. And I think they wanted to prove what…

Junior Nolan Berry leads the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds in convincing Spartan victory over Longhorns.
The De Smet Jesuit boys basketball team earned itself just the kind of win most thought they would get against the underdog Parkway West Monday night, in the first round of the Parkway West/Ameritime Classic Boys Basketball Tournament at Missouri Baptist University’s Carl and Doris Petty Student Recreation Center. The Spartans weren’t all-time great against the Longhorns, but they were absolutely good enough, in what proved to be a convincing 57-42 win for De Smet. “I thought we did what we had to do against these guys,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “They do some things to frustrate you, and force you out of your game a little bit. They make it hard to play against them sometimes.” And it was because of West’s frustrating style…

Spartans were upset by Cadets in Meramec Tournament last week, but avenged that loss Friday.
A little over a week ago, the De Smet Jesuit High School boys basketball team – the same team that was ranked No. 1 in the area in most top 10 preseason basketball polls – suffered a mystifying 11-point loss to then-unranked rival CBC, in the semifinals of the Meramec Holiday Hoops Tournament. The hangover from that loss seemed to carry over to the next night, as De Smet lost the Meramec third-place game as well, and slipped all the way to No. 8 in the area in this week’s rankings. On Friday though, the Spartans looked like a team still angry about last week’s loss, as they completely dismantled CBC, by the score of 64-42, in a critical Metro Catholic Conference game at CBC’s D.C. Wilcutt Gymnasium. “It’s never fun to lose to CBC,” De Smet…

6’8 Nolan Berry had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and 6’11 Eric Moeller had 21 points to lead Spartans to 79-70 win over Red Devils.
When local basketball preseason prognosticators voted De Smet the No. 1 team in the area before the start of the season, they likely had visions of the Spartans’ massive frontline of 6’8 Nolan Berry, 6’11 Eric Moeller, and 6’6 Alec Bausch wreaking havoc on opposing defenses all season long running through their heads. After two early losses though, De Smet isn’t the top-ranked team in the area anymore, but on Thursday night, the Spartans’ big boy lineup did dominate the action against rival Chaminade, in what proved to be an impressive 79-70 victory over the Red Devils. “I thought there were definitely moments where we played our game,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “To their credit, they did some really tough things defensively …
