The school held the team's banquet Monday
It has been a tough time at De Smet Jesuit in recent days, as the school mourns the death of a student. Events have been postponed and rescheduled in light of what happened. Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Greg Vitello consulted with others as he thought if it would be best to do the same for the team's annual banquet Monday, where the school would celebrate the Spartans' recent state soccer title. Ultimately, the decision was made to go forward, as a way to heal, and to give the school community something to smile about. Vitello started the program with a revised schedule to allow students who also had a hockey commitment Monday night, to make their game. One of them, in particular, had done something to earn a little slack. "Scott scored a …

The Spartans head to the state soccer tournament Tuesday.
Beating any team three times in a single season is tough. And in a conference game or against a heated rival, it's even more unlikely. You know your opponents almost as well as you know yourself. By that logic, the sports law of averages was bound to be in De Smet's favor heading to the pitch against CBC Wednesday, having lost 2-1 in September and then again in penalty kicks last month. But that only served to stir a crazed scene of celebration on the field Wednesday after De Smet ended CBC's hopes for a state title with a 2-1 overtime win for the District 2 crown. De Smet Senior Scott Russo put the ball in the net past CBC Junior keeper Nathaniel Griffin with 6:30 left in the first overtime period, sending the Spartans on to the state …

Whitfield's Bill Daues is named "Coach of the Year."
Over a thousand St. Louis soccer coaches, players, retired players, and family of players and coaches gathered downtown at the Millennium Hotel for the 41st annual St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame induction ceremony. On Thursday night, they came to honor most dedicated and talented. Among those, was 22-year veteran Whitfield coach, Bill Daues, who was given the Jimmy Dunn "Coach of the Year" Award. Daues said it's great to recognized, but called it a "shared award," because making a good soccer player is about the process, which involves every coach and player played with and against along the way. He also said receiving the award is a "once in a lifetime" honor. "It's hard to become a good soccer player, and it should be hard," he said. …

The Spartans were unable to take advantage of chances against the Cadets Thursday night.
FENTON—In a soccer contest described as “not pretty” by CBC coach Terry Michler, and “very entertaining” by De Smet coach Greg Vitello, CBC defeated De Smet 2-1 on Thursday night at the A-B Soccer Park. The game was a rematch of the 2010 Class 3 District 3 title game, which CBC won. Thursday's game was the second contest for each squad in the CBC Tournament, and an early season test for the traditional soccer powers. De Smet had possession for most of the first 15 minutes, until CBC junior Julius Adewumni scored from up close, which seemed to turn the tide. “We were at De Smet’s mercy most of the night,” CBC coach Terry Michler said. The Cadets made life difficult for themselves throughout the game, being shown several yellow cards, and …

Whitfield's Bill Daues to receive the area's highest honor for prep coaches in October as part of St. Louis Soccer Hall Of Fame Festivities.
The Creve Coeur area's ability to produce prolific soccer talent on the field and on the sideline will be honored by the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in October. Whitfield School Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Bill Daues, who has won 3 of the last 4 state Class 1 titles and was named Class 1 Coach of the Year in 2010, will receive the Jimmy Dunn Memorial High School Coach of the Year during annual Hall of Fame festivities in October. In a statement released by the school, Daues, who has won a total of 7 state soccer titles at Whitfield, said. “I am honored to receive this award, and this recognition would not be possible without all the past and present Whitfield soccer players who through hard work and effort, have made the Whitfield soccer …
