Memories Priceless for Local State Swimmers at the State Championships

Really strong finishes by MICDS, St. Joseph's Academy and John Burroughs.

The girls state swim meet, without fail provides emotional moments and memories for a lifetime. Sometimes, there are just as many tears rolling down the faces of the competitors are there are water drops in the pool. In particular, it had to be emotional for senior Trey Ross (Patch MVP of the Week) who swam her very last race for the MICDS Rams. That thought crossed her mind as she sprinted home in the 12th and final event, the 400 yard relay of the 38th state swim championships. “I never swam harder in my entire life. I gave it everything I had,” said Ross, who will study journalism in college but has not decided on which school yet. “That was the fastest I’ve ever gone and by three seconds, and that felt good,” said Ross. She had a whale…

High School Hockey Roundup: MICDS, Ladue Might Make Wick Cup Playoffs, JBS Will Play In Founder's Cup Bracket

MICDS and Ladue will meet in huge Monday night matchup at Queeny Park, while Burroughs won't play until Friday, when it meets Ft. Zumwalt South at the Brentwood Ice Arena.

The home stretch of the Mid-States Hockey Association regular season is definitely upon us. And with just over two weeks left until the start of the playoffs, only a few of the area's near 50 hockey-playing clubs know for sure which post-season tournament they're going to be in. John Burroughs is one of those clubs. The Bombers, 4-14 with just three games left on the schedule, already know no matter how they close out the regular season, that they'll be playing in the Founder's Cup playoffs with 12-15 other developing club hockey programs. JBS was 4-17 last year, and hoped to improve their record this year, and maybe earn a berth in the next level up Wickenheiser Cup (Wick Cup) playoffs. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen this year…

Big Night Of Local Hoops Includes Doubleheader At MICDS, Ladue In Championship Game At CBC

Bombers' and Rams' boys and girls will begin the night with double-dip at McDonnell, while No. 7 Ladue hopes to play giant-killer against No. 2 CBC.

The first big night of the high school hoops season comes tonight, with a trio of big ballgames featuring some of the best teams from the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area. On a city-wide scale, most eyes will be trained on the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament out at CBC High School in Town and Country, where the Ladue High boys will take on the No. 2-ranked CBC Cadets at 8 p.m. CBC was the area's preseason No. 1, with at least three top college prospects on their roster, including 6'7 swingman Jordan Barnett, 6'6 power forward Ray Doby, and 6'6 shooting guard Patrick McCaw. The Cadets lost their No. 1 ranking after falling in the championship game of the Meramec Tournament to Hazelwood Central back on December 30. Since then, …

MICDS Girls Drop the Hammer on Ladue, Winning Handily, 67-35

MICDS Rams spurt out to 19-0 start of game, and were never headed.

When Ladue’s 6-foot-3 senior center Taylor Robinson makes up her mind to go to the hole, there is probably not a defender on this planet who can stop her. Unfortunately for the Ladue Rams, Robinson just gained her second-half eligibility and is battling to get back into shape and into the starting lineup. Robinson started the game on the bench as the host MICDS Rams fired up a full court suffocating defense and a spirited running game to build a 19-0 lead. By the time Robinson got into the game (4:50 in the first quarter), all Ladue’s coaches could do was sit and watch. “When they build a 19-0 lead, our entire game plan was completely out the window. At that point, it’s just survival time,” said Ladue’s coach Cord Dockery who could only …

One More Look Back at the Locals In all the Holiday Tournaments

Championship trophies for Ladue, MICDS girls and Burroughs boys. Second for St. Joe Angels.

The 2012 holiday hoop fests were ones for the ages in Ladue and Frontenac. Burroughs went overtime and beat Pattonville, winning at Chaminade the second-consecutive year. The MICDS girls celebrated coach Scott Small's birthday by winning their own tournament, beating arch rival Westminster Christian Academy for the trophy. That ends a 5 game spell held by the Wildcats over the Rams. The Ladue girls won the first ever Ritenour tournament, defeating the host school for the title, and ending the Huskies 8-game win streak. St. Joe came close again. In the finals of the Visitation Holiday Festival, the Angels lost to their nemesis the Red Knights of Incarnate Word. The Ladue boys fell in the semifinals of the MICDS tourney to Duchesne of St. …

Holiday Hoop Tournaments Resume Play Today

Ladue, Burroughs, MICDS, St. Joe all see action at various sites.

After the Christmas turkey or ham is all carved up; the desserts are all devoured and the tables are cleared, it will be time to get back to life at the hoops. The tournament ball will be bouncing zany all over Missouri and Illinois starting later today. The Ladue-Frontenac locals will show their hoop skills all over town. Here’s a brief synopsis of the games involved: MICDS boys Quarterfinals noon: Ladue and St. Charles 1:30 Lutheran North and Duchesne 6 p.m. Miller Career Academy and St. Louis U. High 7:30 p.m. Parkway Central and Westminster. Cornell Johnson will have the chance to establish himself as one of the premier point guards in the area. Ladue has never won this tournament. MICDS Boys Fall Just Short In Rally Attempt Against No. 6 Westminster Christian

Senior Trey Pettus scores game-high 21 points to keep Rams in it, but late free throw gives Wildcats just enough to squeak by.

After losing three close ballgames in the first three weeks of the season, MICDS boys basketball coach Matt Hixenbaugh felt like the win his Rams got at the buzzer on a trip to Nashville a couple weeks ago, might finally be the one to get the Rams over the hump. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way last Saturday evening, when MICDS hosted Westminster Christian Academy in the first round of the 2012 MICDS Boys Holiday Invitational Tournament. The Rams trailed from very early on, and fell behind by as many as 12 points at one juncture. But the tournament hosts nearly rallied all the way back, getting to within two points in the final seconds. But a clutch free throw by Westminster's Jack Dohr gave the No. 6-ranked Wildcats just enough …

Patch High School Hoops Roundup: JBS Boys, St. Joe Girls Remain Unbeaten Heading Into Holiday Break

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

As the Missouri high school basketball season passes the quarter pole, two things have become crystal clear. The John Burroughs boys team is really good. And so is the St. Joseph's Academy girls team. Those points have been driven home emphatically, as both teams have begun the new season with unblemished records. The JBS boys are 7-0, following a sensational 56-45 win over O'Fallon Christian at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout at Lindenwood University last Saturday. That victory capped an incredible week for the Bombers, who won all three games they played, adding in triumphs over Brentwood (65-31, back on December 10) and Clayton (60-59 on Decmeber 13). Senior guard Foye Oluokun has been stuffing the stat sheet all year for …
