Another Win, Another Shutout for Soccer Rebels

Priory blanks MICDS 5-0 Wednesday in a Metro League contest at MICDS.

The Priory soccer team has played 11 games this season. The Rebels have won them all and have given up just one goal all season. They recorded their 10th shutout of 2011 Wednesday in a convincing 5-0 Metro League victory over MICDS. "We are strong all over the field and everybody defends," Priory coach John Mohrmann said of the key to the tremendous defensive record. "It keeps the pressure off the backs and the keeper." Rebel senior sweeper Kyle Martin is often without a lot of work during a game. "There are times that 20 or 25 minutes go by and I don't touch the ball," said Martin, who has started on varsity since he was a freshman. "Our motto this year is "fierce" and that is the way we play defensively from the forwards all the way to …

Eighth-Grader Turns An Observation Into A Chance To Help

Sydney Lefton saw a need and decided to do something about it.

MICDS eighth-grader Sydney Lefton turned a school field trip to North Side Community School into a charitable project. “When I first saw the school my impression was I was lucky because they didn’t have any books. It’s really small there; they don’t have a lot of supplies in their classrooms,” Sydney said. So she decided to start a book drive to help the students. This collection drive for books for kindergarteners through second-graders became Sydney’s project for her bat mitzvah. “I made flyers and told my friends about it. And I invited everyone who I invited to my bat mitzvah; I sent a list of books.” She then picked a day and asked everyone to drop off the books at her home. Apparently Sydney’s efforts worked because she collected …

Area high school students in Creve Coeur volunteer program host a fun time for pediatric patients.

Some St. Louis-area high schoolers interested in a medical profession have spent learning about many aspects of working in a hospital. St. John’s Mercy Medical Center hosted the program called TLC, Teens Learning in the Community, a 6-week project that combined presentations from hospital staff and student volunteer opportunities.. Lauren Lee, Administrative assistant for volunteer services, said they learned what it’s like on a day-to-day basis from pediatricians, nurse practitioners, radiologists covering medical to administrative tasks. Chaminade Shrugs Off Beal's Slow Start, Powers To Win Over MICDS

Chaminade keeps perfect season intact.

By his own admission, Chaminade senior Bradley Beal wasn't on his game. But Thursday night's 69-46 Red Devils nonconference victory at home over MICDS was the perfect example of why basketball is a team game. Beal pumped in a game-high 28 points, which is four below his average, but the University of Florida-bound recruit knocked in 17 of those points on 26 free throw attempts, which is part of his arsenal–drive hard to the hole and induce contact. But it was guys like Luke Bumgarner, Tevin Evans, Andy Kleinlein and Brendan Kelly who picked up the pace for their leading scorer. "I probably had the worst first half I can remember playing in my life," said Beal, who helped the Red Devils remain undefeated at 12-0. "I'm just so fortunate to …
