De Smet Falls In State Championship Against Rockhurst

The Spartans' ride to Columbia comes up one game short in the Class 5 Title Saturday against the Hawklets.

During De Smet Jesuit's march to the state finals, the Spartans used a high shooting percentage and strength on the interior to muscle their way to Columbia. But Saturday, the team ran into a Rockhurst club opponent that could shoot and rebound better than they could, en route to a Hawklet 73-59 victory in the Class 5 State basketball title game played at Mizzou Arena. The game was broadcast statewide on FOX Sports Midwest.  Nolan Berry got on the board with an eary lay-in 15 seconds in for the game's first basket, but Berry, the Butler signee, was double-teamed by the Hawklets early and often, and Rockhurst (26-5) used a decided rebounding edge to get second-chance scoring opportunities. It didn't hurt that Rockhurst senior Kyle Wolf was …

De Smet Jesuit advances to play Rockhurst Saturday night. The Spartans played Rockhurst in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in St. Louis this season and were handled by their Jesuit counterparts from the other side of the state.  Berry, who played with the flu that night, said Rockhurst didn't get De Smet Jesuit's best …

Jim 'Bubba' Goessling's Memory Lives On In Teams' Final Four Run

De Smet Jesuit and St. Joe's Academy have dedicated their seasons to the late Spartan alum.

When the De Smet Jesuit Spartans walked off the court and headed for the locker room at Hyland Arena at Lindenwood University Saturday after dispatching Jackson in the Class 5 quarterfinals, they received congratulatory hand slaps from the girls basketball team at St. Joseph's Academy. The girls had their own business to attend to immediately afterward, and followed through with a win against Parkway South to clinch their own trip to Mizzou Arena.  The wins mean the #35 warmup jerseys the teams have both worn this season will get at least one more use. The jerseys honor the late Jim Goessling, the De Smet Jesuit graduate who was part of the school's first state championship basketball team. Goessling died last October after a battle with …

Parkway North Hurlers Out To Prove 2012 Was No Fluke

Joe Hope and Joey Reeves look forward to full season with the varsity squad after last season's meteoric rise and a ride to the state final four.

When Parkway North needed a boost last season, Head Coach Fred Friedman tapped a pair of pitchers who didn't start the year on varsity. Joe Hope and Joey Reeves came up from JV and pitched the Vikings on a magical run to the state final four in Springfield.  All Hope, then a Sophomore (7-1, 3.40 ERA) did was shut out a Westminster Christian Academy team that's been the best in the state the past two seasons. He also threw a no-hitter in the state semifinal.  Just a Freshman, Reeves (3-0, 1.58 ERA) was masterful in a state quarterfinal win over SLUH, before shoulder tendinitis and what was diagnosed as a stress fracture in his collarbone caught up with him in the state championship game against Rockwood Summit. But that was last year. In …

Ladue Board To Talk School Security, Activity Fees and Start Times

Monday night, school board members will discuss possible security changes coming in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut mass shooting.

The Ladue school district, which responded to the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting last month by making one quick change at Horton Watkins High School to lock doors during the day, will outline other measures at Monday's school board meeting which could still be taken to improve school security. A more thorough conversation on security is planned for board discussion next month. Awareness of issues surrounding school security at Ladue schools has been heightened in recent weeks. An Instagram account discovered recently featured a profile photo of the shooter in the Newtown shooting and prompted school leaders to ask for a ramped up police presence. Police have reportedly issued a search warrant for Instagram in hopes of tracking …

I am not in this for any reason other than the best for our school district. We have some of the best teachers and adminastrators in the state. I feel that our past practices of budget control from past boards have not been the best. Our board has to look long range to keep problems from shortages of funds from happenning at the level they have gotten. We must have better fiscal responsibilities.   more ›

Chaminade Defeats Rock Bridge In State Soccer Semifinal

The Red Devils' 2-1 overtime win paves way for meeting with fellow St. Louis power CBC Saturday.

In a move that KSDK sporstscaster Frank Cusumano deadpanned Friday night was as smart as moving Jay Leno to 10pm, St. Louis area soccer powers Chaminade and CBC will square off for a state title Saturday...in Blue Springs. Chaminade needed overtime before Jason Pesek ended the contest at 2-1. The CBC Cadets earned their way in by defeating Rockhurst 1-0 in Class 3's other semifinal. To listen to Friday's match and to hear Saturday's 4 p.m. final go to Chaminade's CSPN By the way, the MSHSAA contract will keep soccer's final four at Blue Springs South High School until spring 2014.

De Smet Jesuit Football Title Hopes Dashed By Blue Springs

The Spartans fell at home against one of the top teams in the state, while the cross-town Red Devils earned slot in Saturday's state soccer championship match.

The busloads of fans who made their way from Blue Springs to Creve Coeur Friday will have a reason for a return trip to St. Louis next weekend, after their team bulldozed their way through the Class 6 state semifinal at De Smet Jesuit with a 42-7 win. State Soccer Semis: Chaminade Advances To Face CBC The Wildcats will face Francis Howell next weekend at the Edward Jones Dome. One week after the Spartans gave up 14 early points to top-ranked CBC, the same thing happened against Blue Springs, but there would be no comeback Friday. Wildcat QB Wylson Lamb connected with receiver Darrius Shepherd on a 47 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and running back Dalvin Warmack scored the first of three scores as Blue Springs dominated both …
