De Smet Jesuit Hoops: Spartans Carry On Despite Losing Nolan Berry To Injury

The senior-laden squad is 2-0 after a win over Cardinal Ritter in the Whitfield Tournament.

"Someone has to step up." It may be one of if not the most overrused statements in the sporting world, but if it has ever applied, it has in recent weeks at De Smet Jesuit, as the Spartans have dealt with the loss of injured forward Nolan Berry. Berry, the 6-8 star who signed a letter of intent to play at Butler University earlier this month, broke both of his arms in preseason practice November 20, meaning the team will be missing its 6th all-time leading scorer for an extended period of time. Read: De Smet Jesuit's Nolan Berry Out With Two Fractured Arms How long is still an open question. Coach Kevin Poelker praised Berry's "fire" in wanting to get back as soon as possible---he's already doing therapy-- but the earliest anything figures…

De Smet Puts Up Strong Showing But Can't Hold Off SLUH In Metro Catholic Track Championships

Spartans dominate sprint relays, but Jr. Billikens dominate nearly everything else to claim conference track title.

If Thursday's big annual boys track meet at Chaminade had simply been the Metro Catholic Conference Relays, then the De Smet Jesuit team would've won and defended its conference title easily. The Spartans, led by senior and Oklahoma University-bound football star Durron Neal, absolutely dominated the sprint relays and set new meet records in the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. But Thursday's meet wasn't only about the relay races, it was in fact the full MCC Track Championship meet, and included all 18 of the usual events. And as well as its team performed, De Smet just couldn't stay with Saint Louis University High, which won or took second in 15 of the 18 events, to reclaim the MCC track championship after losing it to the Spartans last …

De Smet Baseball Claims Win In Slugfest Over Chaminade

Junior Brandon Gutzler was 4-for-4 with four RBI to pace Spartans' biggest offensive output of the young season.

Even though the new high school baseball season is barely two weeks old, one thing is clear about the 2012 Chaminade and De Smet ballclubs -- their hitters are already in mid-season form. At least it sure seemed that way when the Red Devils and Spartans met in a Metro Catholic Conference game at De Smet Wednesday afternoon. The two clubs combined for 23 hits, including nearly a dozen extra-base hits, in an old-fashioned MCC slugfest, which the home team Spartans eventually claimed by the final score of 8-5. "We put the ball in play today, and we moved guys around," De Smet Head Coach Greg Vitello said. "But that doesn't always happen. I kind of thought our base-running kind of got us going a little bit today." De Smet was aggressive in …

De Smet Nets Impressive Tie Against SLUH, Must Wait To Win Back Catholic Cup

Spartans outskate SLUH for much of the night, but can only produce a 1-1 tie against Metro Catholic Conference rivals.

As much as it might have been deserved, and as much as the two fanbases wanted it to happen, there would be no fancy nor heroic trophy ceremonies Friday night, when the De Smet and Saint Louis University High hockey teams met at the Queeny Park Ice Rink to battle for the Catholic Cup. The SLUH Jr. Billikens, one of the top-rated teams in the Mid-States Hockey Association this season, won the Cup away from then-defending state champion De Smet by beating the Spartans five times last season. This season, the still very young Spartans were hoping to bring the Catholic Cup back to Creve Coeur. Unfortunately, despite a brilliant effort, led by goalkeeper Evan Amann’s incredible 30-for-31 shots saved night in net, De Smet could only muster one …

Record-Setting Night For Chaminade Shooting Not Enough To Win At De Smet

Spartans make it two in a row to start new calendar year, behind point guard Jimmy Barton’s game-high 20 points and 10 assists.

On a night when it seemed no one from either team could miss from long-range, the De Smet basketball team did just enough from inside the three-point arc Tuesday night, to overcome a record shooting night by visiting crosstown rival Chaminade to pull out a 64-54 win in a critical Metro Catholic Conference game. “They were struggling to get points in the paint,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “But credit to them, they devised a way to get themselves some open looks from outside, and they didn’t miss them.” No they did not. The Red Devils hit a school-record 15 three-pointers (on 31 attempts) on Tuesday, to stay in a game that seemed destined to be a De Smet blowout from the outset. In fact, it was Spartan junior point guard Jimmy …

De Smet Gets Sweet Revenge With Rousing Win Over Rival CBC

Spartans were upset by Cadets in Meramec Tournament last week, but avenged that loss Friday.

A little over a week ago, the De Smet Jesuit High School boys basketball team – the same team that was ranked No. 1 in the area in most top 10 preseason basketball polls – suffered a mystifying 11-point loss to then-unranked rival CBC, in the semifinals of the Meramec Holiday Hoops Tournament. The hangover from that loss seemed to carry over to the next night, as De Smet lost the Meramec third-place game as well, and slipped all the way to No. 8 in the area in this week’s rankings. On Friday though, the Spartans looked like a team still angry about last week’s loss, as they completely dismantled CBC, by the score of 64-42, in a critical Metro Catholic Conference game at CBC’s D.C. Wilcutt Gymnasium. “It’s never fun to lose to CBC,” De Smet…

De Smet’s Big Men Prove Too Much For Chaminade To Handle

6’8 Nolan Berry had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and 6’11 Eric Moeller had 21 points to lead Spartans to 79-70 win over Red Devils.

When local basketball preseason prognosticators voted De Smet the No. 1 team in the area before the start of the season, they likely had visions of the Spartans’ massive frontline of 6’8 Nolan Berry, 6’11 Eric Moeller, and 6’6 Alec Bausch wreaking havoc on opposing defenses all season long running through their heads. After two early losses though, De Smet isn’t the top-ranked team in the area anymore, but on Thursday night, the Spartans’ big boy lineup did dominate the action against rival Chaminade, in what proved to be an impressive 79-70 victory over the Red Devils. “I thought there were definitely moments where we played our game,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “To their credit, they did some really tough things defensively …

Metro Catholic Conference Notebook For The Week Of Sept. 25

The Spartans soccer team continues to pile up wins; Cadets football maintains edge, stays unbeaten

De Smet veteran soccer coach Greg Vitello knows a thing or two about winning programs and state championships. So when Vitello was asked earlier this week whether his 2011 Spartans had the makings of a special team, he wouldn't acknowledge it but wuldn't back off the question either. "What this team has is good depth," Vitello said after a victory over Whitfield. "In years past, our depth hasn't always been that good. This year, we have good depth, and that makes a team so much better because they compliment those guys you depend on." De Smet continues its early-season roll with four more wins this past week over Whitfield (8-1), Fort Zumwalt South (5-0), John Burroughs (4-1) and Saturday's 2-0 win over Loyola Academy of Chicago. The …

De Smet and Chaminade Prepare to Renew Rivalry

De Smet is getting ready to host a key matchup against conference rival Chaminade.

Chaminade (3-0) will be taking an undefeated record into enemy territory on Friday when the Red Devils visit rival De Smet (3-1).  This should be the biggest test of season for the Red Devils, whose average margin of victory this season has been 30 points, with the closest game being a 47-32 win to open the season over Riverview Gardens. De Smet has gotten off to a hot start as well, with the only bump in the road being a 52-22 loss to one of the area’s best teams, CBC, at the Edward Jones Dome. The Spartans bounced back the following week by beating Vianney and are hoping to keep their momentum going this weekend. A big factor for Chaminade will be if its defense can stop De Smet senior wide receiver Durron Neal. Neal is one of the top …

Metro Catholic Conference Notebook For September 19

No letdown for CBC football in rout of SLUH; CYC/Bob Guelker Soccer Tournament gets underway Monday night

After an impressive win over a powerful De Smet club the previous week, CBC had to guard against the proverbial "letdown" game this past week. The Cadets, after a bit of a slow start, unleashed 34 unanswered points and remained atop of the Metro Catholic Conference standings with a 34-7 thumping of SLUH Friday night. Cadets coach Scott Pingel talked about it with his players and they responded accordingly as CBC improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the MCC. After his big game against the Spartans, quarterback Dalton Demos followed it up with a 15-for-29 passing game for 234 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 66-yarder to Marcus Wheat in the fourth quarter. Antonio Brown broke the century mark with 105 rushing yards and two scores …
