MICDS and Ladue will meet in huge Monday night matchup at Queeny Park, while Burroughs won't play until Friday, when it meets Ft. Zumwalt South at the Brentwood Ice Arena.
The home stretch of the Mid-States Hockey Association regular season is definitely upon us. And with just over two weeks left until the start of the playoffs, only a few of the area's near 50 hockey-playing clubs know for sure which post-season tournament they're going to be in. John Burroughs is one of those clubs. The Bombers, 4-14 with just three games left on the schedule, already know no matter how they close out the regular season, that they'll be playing in the Founder's Cup playoffs with 12-15 other developing club hockey programs. JBS was 4-17 last year, and hoped to improve their record this year, and maybe earn a berth in the next level up Wickenheiser Cup (Wick Cup) playoffs. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen this year…

Sophomore Ian Thomsen moves up from backline to star at center, with three goals in Rams romp over Pirates.
ST. PETERS -- With both teams playing with short benches and small rosters, the Ladue High hockey team earned its first win of the season Saturday night, with an 8-2 rout over Pattonville High, at the St. Peters Rec-Plex South ice facility. The Rams, who were playing without leading scorer Matthew Gould and top goaltender Elliot Shevitz, got big games from underclassmen stand-ins Ian Thomsen and Graham Gausnell that no one could've predicted before the game began. Thomsen, a sophomore defenseman-turned-centerman on Saturday, netted a hat trick to lead the Ladue offense, while the freshman Gausnell made his first high school start in goal a memorable one, by stopping 18 Pattonville shots to pick up his first high school victory. "It really …

Hunt Lucas' overtime shootout goal carries Warriors past Lutheran South en route to second state hockey championship in school history.
SCOTTRADE CENTER -- Whitfield School senior hockey star Hunt Lucas couldn't believe his moment had finally come. All his life he'd dreamed of this circumstance -- game tied...no time on the clock... just him and the other goalie...needing to make one play to win his team a championship. And Wednesday night, after an exhausting three full periods of hockey, plus overtime, in the Wickenheiser Cup championship game against rival Lutheran South, Lucas' moment had finally come. And he delivered, scoring the only goal during the overtime shootout against the Lancers, which lifted Whitfield to a 6-5 win, and gave the Warriors their second Wick Cup title in school history. "Oh my god, it's like a dream come true," Lucas said, following Whitfield's…

The Warriors face Lutheran South at Scottrade in their bid for a second Wickenheiser Cup.
After getting hot in the playoffs and winning the Founder's Cup championship with a team full of underclassmen last year, many believed that this year would be the year the Whitfield School Hockey Club could get back to its state championship level of four seasons ago. And it seems those people were right, as the Warriors, who won the Wickenheiser Cup state championship in 2008, have advanced to this year's Mid-States Hockey Association Wickenheiser Cup championship game. They face No. 1 seed Lutheran South, this Wednesday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The Warriors, have had a sensational run through the playoffs, which included early-round wins over Parkway South and Ft. Zumwalt West, and a remarkable come-from-behind …

Suburban North Conference champion Pirates finish year with 25-4-1 record, after playoff ouster on Tuesday night.
WEBSTER GROVES – The best season in the history of Pattonville High School hockey ended Tuesday night, when the Pirates were eliminated from the first round of the Mid-States Hockey Association Challenge Cup playoffs by the No. 2-ranked team in the area, the SLUH Jr. Billikens. Pattonville, which was surprisingly named the No. 15 seed in the Challenge Cup playoffs, despite winning the Suburban North Conference and posting an area-best 25-2-1 record this season, lost Game 1 against SLUH 8-1 last Friday. That meant the Pirates would have to win twice on Tuesday, if they were going to somehow advance to the second round. “We were really surprised (by the seeding),” Pattonville head hockey coach Randy Guenther said. “I know we didn’t play in …

Rebels fall 13-0 to state title contender Wildcats, but still land a spot in Wickenheiser Cup playoffs.
BRENTWOOD – On the bright side, heading into Saturday night’s Mid-States Hockey Association regular season finale at the Brentwood Ice Arena, the St. Louis Priory High ice hockey team knew it had one last chance to make a good enough impression on the seeding committee that would determine what bracket the Rebels should be in this playoff season. Unfortunately, that last game though, was against a team that’s won 16 of the 20 games its played this season and is ranked No. 4 in the state, according to ushighschoolhockey.com – the Westminster Christian Academy Wildcats. And Westminster made sure to make its own statement about what its playoff placement ought to be, as it unleashed an offensive barrage on the Rebels, unlike anything that had…

Spartans outskate SLUH for much of the night, but can only produce a 1-1 tie against Metro Catholic Conference rivals.
As much as it might have been deserved, and as much as the two fanbases wanted it to happen, there would be no fancy nor heroic trophy ceremonies Friday night, when the De Smet and Saint Louis University High hockey teams met at the Queeny Park Ice Rink to battle for the Catholic Cup. The SLUH Jr. Billikens, one of the top-rated teams in the Mid-States Hockey Association this season, won the Cup away from then-defending state champion De Smet by beating the Spartans five times last season. This season, the still very young Spartans were hoping to bring the Catholic Cup back to Creve Coeur. Unfortunately, despite a brilliant effort, led by goalkeeper Evan Amann’s incredible 30-for-31 shots saved night in net, De Smet could only muster one …
