Ladue Football Done In For Season By Weather And Westminster

Thursday's district playoff opener was delayed for 50 minutes at the outset due to severe lightning storm. Once things got rolling, it was all Wildcats in a 28-0 victory over the Rams.

BALLWIN -- About 30 minutes before the start of Thursday's MSHSAA Class 4 District 3 playoff opener at Parkway West High School's Longhorn Stadium, between Westminster Christian Academy and Ladue, Mother Nature decided it was time she show everyone thinking about football what real power was. First, the skies opened and a furious storm followed. Then, just for good measure, the lightning strikes began and sent everyone running for cover. The water and light show continued for nearly an hour before the first-round playoff game between two of the more underrated teams in the area. Early on in the game, it seemed lightning struck again -- only this time it wasn't Mother Nature. Instead, it was Westminster junior quarterback Brett Bond who …

Ladue Wins 28-21 Over Clayton; Making the Hounds Account for Their Sins

Series of penalties ranging from clipping to holding to going off sides hurt Clayton's chances.

Ladue’s football coach Mike Tarpey got a double dose of good news Friday night. For one, his gritty Rams outlasted Clayton in a slugfest, winning 28-21 on Centenne Field on Gay Avenue. More importantly, he got a good medical report on injured Jaron Jones from the hospital before he left the field. Injury silenced a large crowd Midway through the game, Jones came dead aim across the field to tackle a loose Greyhound runner. The G-force of the collision reverberated across the Clayton sideline. Jones sat up momentarily, then lapsed unconscious. Clayton EMS arrived very quickly and took the motionless senior to an area hospital. The news from the hospital was all good. He probably woke up with a very sore neck on Sunday. The Rams had to …

Rams Open Football Season at Parkway Central Tonight

This is the traditional season opener for both teams.

Every year, it seems the Ladue Rams open up on the Colts synthetic turf. That’s because in 2012, Ladue still does not have lights at its home field. They give away that advantage often. Last year the the Colts put on a strong aerial show and beat the Rams, 31-14. The passing combination at Ladue left via graduation. Brandon Carr, threw for 17 TDS and was a 50 percent passer. His favorite target Jehu Chesson (53 catches, 75  yards and 6 TDs) is locked in a battle for a stating berth for the highly-regarded Michigan Wolverines. Deavin Edwards, who rushed for 26 TDs and 1,579 yards before experiencing a season-ending ankle injury in the Clayton game is gone. He's at Missouri Valley College. It looks like Matt Hooper will be the quarterback. …

Ladue Defeats University City in Regular Season Finale

The Rams' 35-6 victory Thursday at SLUH clinches a playoff spot.

Daylen Dean has been a stalwart on the Ladue defense for the past couple of seasons. The senior was an all-conference performer on defense last year. Dean had another strong effort defensively Thursday night but he also was a big contributor on offense. Dean played a lot of running back in the abscence of standout running back Deavin Edwards, who was out with an ankle injury. Dean responded with 124 yards on just nine carries and a pair of touchdowns as Ladue defeated University City 35-6 in the regular season finale for both teams. The win moves Ladue on to the first round of the playoffs as it will play Vashon Wednesday night at a site to be determined (likely Sumner High School). The loss ended the season for the Lions. "Today was now …

Ladue Tramples Clayton in District Playoffs, 46-21

Star running back Deavin Edwards may be lost for the season.

No one has to remind Ladue’s coach Mike Tarpey that injuries are part of the game. With less than 30 seconds remaining until half time of the district game at Clayton, two-way star Deavin Edwards severely sprained his ankle making a tackle on a Greyhound runner. The loss could be devastating to the Rams’ chances this year. Edwards scored once in the 46-21 victory over Clayton and had 59 yards rushing on nine carries before hobbling off the field. He has 26 TDs and nearly 2,000 yards gained on the ground this season. Doctors might sideline him the rest of the way. “We have to have players step up and make big plays and take Deavin’s part,” said Tarpey. Like Michael Horton-Loftin who blasted his way into the end zone on a 9 yard yard run to …

Ladue Rolls Past Duchesne For Fifth Win in a Row

Deavin Edwards scores four first half touchdowns and Brandon Carr throws three touchdown passes in 52-7 victory at Duchesne.

Ladue's football game at Duchesne Thursday night had all the makings of a "trap" game. For one, the game was played on a Thursday night on a short week. It came against a non-conference opponent which had lost three games in a row. And it came a week before the start of districts and a huge game next weekend against MICDS. But Ladue was not trapped in the least as it dominated from start to finish. The Rams scored early and often in a 52-7 victory. "I was very proud and happy with the way we played tonight," Ladue coach Mike Tarpey said. "One of the focuses this week was to come out strong and we were able to do that. This was about as complete a game as we have played from start to finish." The defense did its part with five turnovers. …

Ladue Sticks the Wood to Affton 48-0

Rams rack up big homecoming victory. Next is Duchesne Thursday night.

Before the homecoming dance begins and all the hoopla, the football team needs to take care of its business. Deavin Edwards galloped for TD runs of 39 twice and five yards and Ladue smothered 0-5 Affton, 48-0 for a homecoming victory. Edwards has 10 TDs the past three weeks. Ladue is 4-2, notching four conference victories in a row. It wasn't pretty or artistic. "We got off to a slow start and made lots of mistakes in the first half," said coach Mike Tarpey. "We have to start out better next week," he said. The Rams have a precious three days to get ready for a Thursday night district opener at St. Charles Duchesne Thursday. "It is important that our kids be focused and ready for Duchesne," said Tarpey. The numbers don't lie. Edwards …

Ladue Reverses Trends in First Home Game

The Rams beat the McCluer South-Berkeley Bulldogs with a balanced attack and a solid defense.

Ladue Horton Watkins played its first Suburban East Conference game at its first home game on Saturday. Going in, the Rams were 0-2 and their opponents, the McCluer South-Berkeley Bulldogs were 2-0. Good for the Rams, the game went against the trend, in a big way. Ladue overwhelmed Berkley with passing and rushing, shutting down the Bulldogs 35-0. Senior running back, Deavin Edwards lead the Rams in rushing with 125 yards in 15 carries. He had lost the ball three times in the two previous games, but not here. “Zero fumbles is better,” he said. Junior, Shawn Whitley, who ran for over a 100 yards in each of the two previous games was held to 41 yards in five carries, as he was injured on a tackle at the end of the first half. “Deavin is a …
