The students were received letters of recognition from the National Merit Scholarship program for their academic achievement.

The National Merit Scholarship program has named 26 seniors from the Parkway School District as commended students.  The designation is given to only 5 percent (about 50,000) of the 1.5 million students who enter into the annual competition. Their selection is based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test and weighed against a nationally applied selection index.  The students will receive letters of commendation and, although they do not continue in the competition to become finalists, they are eligible to receive a variety of special scholarships. Parkway Central Class of 2012 Goes Out In Style on 'Unbelievable Night'

The Colts' class of 2012 earned more than $8 million in college scholarships.

If the theme for the night could be just one word, it would have to be unbelievable, because that's the one word hardly anyone could stop saying at Parkway Central's Graduation and Commencement Ceremony, at the Greensfelder Recreation Complex in Queeny Park Thursday night. Surprisingly, there weren't a whole lot of tears shed throughout the evening, but there were certainly lots of smiles, hugs, and cool high-fives, as Parkway Central's 312 graduating seniors said goodbye, received their diplomas, and expressed their love to a school and community that clearly loved them back. "It's great, kinda of a weird feeling, but really unbelievable," said senior and varsity basketball star Zach Biggs, who was also one of 86 Central High students …

Parkway Central Senior Carries On Mom's Search for Cure

Joe Esstman walks on sunshine.

A Parkway Central High School teen who lived five years of his childhood with his mother's diagnosis of a brain tumor, and the next five years carrying on without her, encourages others to join a June 3 "Walk On Sunshine" fundraiser for a cure. High school senior Joe Esstman, 18, said he was inspired carrying on his mother's legacy with "Walk On Sunshine." Suzy Esstman launched the fundraiser in 2005 to bring awareness to inoperable brain tumors and raise funds for research and cure. Suzy, a Parkway North gradudate, died in 2007 when Joe was 13. According to a video on the "Walk On Sunshine" website, Joe described what he learned. "I just want people to know there are so many challenges in life, and sometimes there are things you can't …

Third Annual Kicks For Cancer Soccer Game Another Rousing Success

Idea borne out of a coach shopping for new equipment, has grown into one of the area's best high school soccer events of the year.

CHESTERFIELD -- One day while at a coaching convention in New York three and a half years ago, Pattonville girls soccer coach Tom Iffrig and assistant coach Scott Johnson were walking past a manufacturer's display for its new pink soccer balls and had a wonderful, simultaneous idea. "We both looked at them, and then at the same time, we turned to each other and said, 'we should do a cancer awareness game'," Iffrig said, on Thursday, after Pattonville played in the Third Annual Kicks For Cancer event at Parkway Central High. "We talked to some people about it, and kind of put it together quickly. And now three years later, it's grown into all this." All this, is an event that while still in its infancy, has grown into an occasion that has …

Parkway South Stuns Rival Parkway Central In Kicks For Cancer Girls Soccer Matchup

Three Patriot players score two goals apiece, as 5-5 South surprises 10th-ranked Central in special game played to raise money for cancer research and awareness.

CHESTERFIELD -- In one of the true shockers of the 2012 girls soccer season, visiting Parkway South, a club that struggled to a 4-5 record previously, took apart rival Parkway Central -- the 10th-ranked team in the area, 7-1 on Thursday, in the Third Annual Kicks For Cancer Game at PCH Stadium. North County schools Pattonville and Hazelwood West have been meeting for the past two years in the Kicks For Cancer game, with one game being played at both schools. But this year, the Pirates and Wildcats invited the Patriots and Colts to join in for single-day, two-game event to be played at Central’s wonderful new football/soccer stadium. A former Parkway Central coach and substitute teacher who was already sentenced to 151 months in federal prison for transporting a minor across state lines to engage in sexual activity, was sentenced Friday to seven years in prison after pleading guilty in St. Louis County Court to 15 counts of Statutory Rape. The sentence will be served concurrently with the federal prison term, according to the Office of State Court Adminstrator's website, Casenet. A guilty plea in the federal case came in October 2011. Parkway North Rides Johnson To Thrilling Win In District Semifinals over Rival Central

Senior Darrell Johnson’s near-triple double leads Vikings to title game berth against De Smet on Friday.

CHESTERFIELD – For the third time this season, archrival boys basketball programs Parkway North and Parkway Central hooked up Wednesday night. The teams traded victories in the two previous meetings, with North earning a 59-51 win in the season opener back in November, and Central claiming a 47-45 win in conference play three weeks ago. But the most important matchup of the season came Wednesday night, when the Vikings and Colts clashed one last time in the MSHSAA Class 5 District 4 semifinals, with the winner earning a shot at the district title game on Friday night. And thanks to a brilliant performance by 6-foot-8, 240-pound senior center Darrell Johnson, it was Parkway North's night, somehow outlasting Parkway Central for a 49-45 win, …

De Smet Advances To District Championship Game After Convincing Semifinal Win Over Hazelwood West

Four Spartans net double-figure scoring totals in 72-52 district semifinal win over Hazelwood West.

CHESTERFIELD – The De Smet boys basketball team earned the right to defend its 2011 district championship, Wednesday evening at Parkway Central High School, with a convincing 72-52 MSHSAA Class 5 District 4 semifinal win over Hazelwood West. The Spartans, the No. 7 ranked team in the area and clear favorites to win their second straight district title, took control of Wednesday’s contest with a 15-4 run late in the second quarter that turned a close ballgame against the Wildcats into a 10-point halftime advantage for De Smet. And despite Hazelwood West’s best efforts to cut into that edge, the Wildcats never could get close enough to really challenge the Spartans’ superiority. “I was really proud,” De Smet head coach Kevin Poelker said. “…
