Parkway North Throttles Ft. Zumwalt South, Advances To State Baseball Quarterfinals

Vikings pound out nine hits and 11 runs on Mizzou-bound starter Gerrion Grim to advance to quarters for first time since 2003.

Most members of the Parkway North baseball team know all about Ft. Zumwalt South star pitcher Gerrion Grim, a senior righthander, who's had a brilliant high school career and is headed to the University of Missouri to play ball next season. But Grim isn't the first future Division-I college pitcher the Vikings have faced this season. So they weren't intimidated one bit, despite Grim's reputation for having a 90-plus mile-per-hour fastball and a curveball that can turn batter's knees into Jell-O. "He's a great pitcher no doubt, a definite ace," Parkway North head coach Fred Friedman said. "But we faced CBC's ace, and Kirkwood's ace, and we've seen plenty of good pitchers. So our guys know to just take our at-bats, and see what we can do." …

Parkway North Outslugs Ladue, Extends Unbeaten String To Eight Games

Despite concerns over field conditions, Vikings and Rams combine for 23 hits and 13 runs in entertaining matchup of conference frontrunners.

After another massive downpour hit the area Monday morning, making the original game location at Ladue High School unplayable, it wasn't until late in the afternoon that the Rams and their hopeful gameday opponent, Parkway North, were able to find someplace else suitable to play. And then, even though the field at the former Westminster Christian Academy, now known as Ladue's West Campus looked fantastic, especially considering all the earlier rain, it took more than a half an hour to convince the game umpires that the playing surface was dry enough to play on. But once head coaches Rob Garrett of Ladue and Fred Friedman of Parkway North were able to convince the umps that the field was indeed safe, the Rams and Vikings staged a wildly …

Parkway North Rides Johnson To Thrilling Win In District Semifinals over Rival Central

Senior Darrell Johnson’s near-triple double leads Vikings to title game berth against De Smet on Friday.

CHESTERFIELD – For the third time this season, archrival boys basketball programs Parkway North and Parkway Central hooked up Wednesday night. The teams traded victories in the two previous meetings, with North earning a 59-51 win in the season opener back in November, and Central claiming a 47-45 win in conference play three weeks ago. But the most important matchup of the season came Wednesday night, when the Vikings and Colts clashed one last time in the MSHSAA Class 5 District 4 semifinals, with the winner earning a shot at the district title game on Friday night. And thanks to a brilliant performance by 6-foot-8, 240-pound senior center Darrell Johnson, it was Parkway North's night, somehow outlasting Parkway Central for a 49-45 win, …

Parkway North Nets Impressive Hoops Win Over U. City

Senior Darrell Johnson’s 24-point, 22-rebound effort leads the way, as Vikes close out regular season with a victory over talented U. City club.

UNIVERSITY CITY – With its sights set firmly on the district playoffs, which begin for all Large school teams in Missouri next week, the Parkway North boys basketball team came into its regular season finale Friday night at University City High, hoping to finally fix a few minor problems that had cost the Vikings several games recently. And thanks to a magnificent effort by senior big man Darrell Johnson, Parkway North seemed to find the answers it was looking for, as it pulled out a thrilling 56-54 road win at U. City’s recently re-named Ed Crenshaw Gymnasium. “We played a real good first, third, and fourth quarter,” North head coach Russell Vincent said. “But we were pretty bad in the second quarter, when we kind of went back into some …

Defensive Pressure Proves Too Much As Parkway North Knocks Off Ladue In Boys Hoops

Senior Darrell Johnson’s 13 points and 12 rebounds help carry Vikes to their fourth straight win to start the new season.

LADUE – With a number of other area teams receiving much of the early-season boys basketball hype, a pair of unbeaten teams flying just under the hype machine’s radar hooked up Friday night at Ladue High’s Nielson Gymnasium. The host Rams came in with a 3-0 record, after impressive wins over John Burroughs, Brentwood, and Normandy, while the visitors from Parkway North came in having swept all three games it played in the Parkway Tip-Off Classic. Something had to give. And something turned out to be the home team’s calm nerves, as Parkway North pushed and pressured Ladue into a night full of bad shots and turnovers, which eventually led the Vikings to a 41-31 win on the road. “What we’ve been winning on all year is because we defend,” …

Boys and girls hoops seasons get underway for most teams beginning on Monday, while the high school hockey season has been going since early November.

With the football and soccer state championships finally bringing the fall sports season to a conclusion, a full schedule of high school hoops on Monday marks the official start of the winter sports season in Creve Coeur. Last year, superstar basketball player Bradley Beal and the No. 1-ranked Chaminade Red Devils were the story to follow on the local sports scene. This season, we’ve got a list of five storylines we think Patch readers will want to follow all season long. (And we encourage our readers to please let us know, if you know of a better Creve Coeur sports story we somehow missed.) Here’s our list of five stories to follow in Creve Coeur this winter: #1 – What happens with Chaminade, now that Brad Beal is at Florida? The Devils …

Parkway Central Ruins Parkway North's Homecoming Fun With 26-7 Football Victory

Junior Alan Gasanli had 165 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Central to big win over district rival North.

PARKWAY NORTH HIGH SCHOOL – The Saturday morning Homecoming festivities celebrated everything wonderful about Parkway North High School and its wonderful 40 years of football history. But the afternoon Homecoming football game itself, belonged to the party-crashers from Parkway Central, who quieted the celebration-minded North fans early, and kept them that way for the rest of the day, with a 26-7 win over the beloved host Vikings. “This one sure feels good,” Central head coach Mark Goldenberg said. “We lost to those guys three years in a row. My seniors and I, my staff, we we’re just getting tired of it. So it feels good to finally get one on those guys.” Central’s last win over North came on October 26, 2007, when star running back …

Parkway North Suffers Second Straight Defeat Despite Comeback

Jovonte Suber manages a three touchdown day as the Vikings' new lead running back.

UNIVERSITY CITY–After two weeks of intermittent great plays one moment and poor throws and decisions the next, University City quarterback DeAndre Williams decided it was time to put it all together and show off the total package. And boy, what a show he put on Friday at Muhl-Schemmer Stadium, when he threw three touchdown passes, ran for a fourth, and made all the key plays in the fourth quarter to lead U. City to a thrilling 25-20 win over Suburban South Conference rival Parkway North. “I’ve always thought that at critical times, you give the ball to your best player,” U. City head coach Carl Reed said. “If I’m going down, I’m going down with the ball in DeAndre Williams’ hands.” And Reed made sure to go all in with Williams, with the …

U. City Overpowers Parkway North 25-20

Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams throws three touchdowns and runs for another in big win for Lions over Vikings.

UNIVERSITY CITY–The University City Lions built a 19-0 lead early in the second half, then had to hold on for dear life, in a 25-20 win over Suburban South Conference rival Parkway North, Friday evening at Muhl-Schemmer Stadium. Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams had a breakout performance in leading U-City to its first win of the season, passing for a career-high 339 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for a score. Teammate Alex Henry caught all three of those scores from Williams, on plays of 13, 26, and 8 yards, with that last one being the eventual game-winner with 7:20 left in the game. Parkway North senior running back Jovonte Suber also had a big day, rushing for 75 yards on 22 carries, along with three touchdowns for a …
