Pattonville Girls Knock Off Hazelwood Central For First League Hoops Title Since 2003

Senior Night celebration turns into conference championship party, as Pirates end the Hawks' five-year reign as Suburban North champs.

MARYLAND HEIGHTS – The hugs, kisses, tears, and high-fives were overflowing Thursday night at Pattonville High School, as the Pirate community hosted “Senior Night” in honor of the graduating class of the girls basketball, drill team, and cheerleading squads. A packed house of Pattonville friends and family proved once again that nobody knows how to throw a “Senior Night” party like the Pirates. And that was before the game even started. Once the action actually began on the court, things only got better for Pattonville, which claimed its first Suburban North Conference girls basketball championship since 2003, with a 42-34 win over five-time defending league champ Hazelwood Central. “It was a big win for us,” Pattonville head coach Craig …

Dream Season Ends For Pattonville Hockey With Playoff Loss To SLUH

Suburban North Conference champion Pirates finish year with 25-4-1 record, after playoff ouster on Tuesday night.

WEBSTER GROVES – The best season in the history of Pattonville High School hockey ended Tuesday night, when the Pirates were eliminated from the first round of the Mid-States Hockey Association Challenge Cup playoffs by the No. 2-ranked team in the area, the SLUH Jr. Billikens. Pattonville, which was surprisingly named the No. 15 seed in the Challenge Cup playoffs, despite winning the Suburban North Conference and posting an area-best 25-2-1 record this season, lost Game 1 against SLUH 8-1 last Friday. That meant the Pirates would have to win twice on Tuesday, if they were going to somehow advance to the second round. “We were really surprised (by the seeding),” Pattonville head hockey coach Randy Guenther said. “I know we didn’t play in …

Lady Pirates Win Non-Leage Hoops Matchup With Ladue

Kristen Hanna paced the Pattonville squad in a 46-40 win Friday.

Sometimes girls basketball teams don’t get the respect they deserve. Far too often, good girls basketball is played before sparse crowds. That’s hardly the case in the friendly confines of the Lady Pirates of Pattonville. An enthusiastic crowd came to cheer the home towners to a hard-fought 46-40 win over visiting Ladue Friday. The event had all the trappings with a red-hot pep band, a large number of cheerleaders and all kinds of gymnasts in green and black outfits. It was a night of fun in Pattonville’s gym. Senior forward Kristen Hanna led the way with 14 points. Mikala McGhee added 13. “For the most part, we’re happy how we played. We were sloppy at times, but the crowd was good and we fed off of that,” said Hanna. The game went back …

High-Scoring Pattonville Hockey Club Hits Halfway Mark With Near-Perfect Record

Led by the area's top two scorers in seniors Joseph Kavanaugh and Logan Harnetz, the Pirates are in first place, with 13-1-1 record this season.

The Pattonville High Ice Hockey Club is has been on some kind of roll through the first half of the 2011-2012 season. The Pirates just passed the midway point of the season (with a win and a tie over Wentzville Holt and Duchesne High Schools this week), and are now eyeing the home stretch of the season with winning the Mid-States Suburban North Conference title in sight. Making some noise when the state tournament rolls around in February is also on the agenda. “We kind of knew this was coming a couple of years ago,” Pattonville hockey coach Randy Guenther said. “Our kids are all juniors and seniors, and we only have one sophomore. “Last year, we did pretty well with a pretty young group. And we only lost three players from last year. So …

Pattonville’s Pressure Bursts Parkway Central’s Bubble In Girls Hoops Battle

Pirates full-court press defense leaves Colts dazed in 61-21 win.

CHESTERFIELD – Coming off two sensational wins to start the season, the Pattonville High girls basketball team expected to face its first significant challenge of the season, Tuesday night, in a non-conference game against Parkway Central High. It was clear right from the tip though, that the Pirates were up to the task. Pattonville held Parkway Central scoreless for the entire first quarter, and led 29-1 midway through the second quarter, before eventually cruising to a 61-21 win over the host Colts. “We played pretty well as a team,” Pattonville head coach Craig Gregory said. “That was probably the closest we’ve played four (full) quarters all season. “(Parkway Central) is a good team. I’ve seen them play several times, and the score …

Five Things To Know In Creve Coeur Winter Sports

Boys and girls hoops seasons get underway for most teams beginning on Monday, while the high school hockey season has been going since early November.

With the football and soccer state championships finally bringing the fall sports season to a conclusion, a full schedule of high school hoops on Monday marks the official start of the winter sports season in Creve Coeur. Last year, superstar basketball player Bradley Beal and the No. 1-ranked Chaminade Red Devils were the story to follow on the local sports scene. This season, we’ve got a list of five storylines we think Patch readers will want to follow all season long. (And we encourage our readers to please let us know, if you know of a better Creve Coeur sports story we somehow missed.) Here’s our list of five stories to follow in Creve Coeur this winter: #1 – What happens with Chaminade, now that Brad Beal is at Florida? The Devils …

Prep Football Preview: Pirates Take Show On The Road

Stadium construction is another challenge in addition to finding new talent on offense.

Pattonville High School Head football coach Steve Smith and his staff will have a fresh start in 2011. Along with an almost entirely new crew of Pirates, the team will play an entire season on the road while the school builds a new stadium. The schedule already includes stops at Lindenwood University and the Edward Jones Dome. With only a handful of returning seniors, Smith will be looking for new leaders to set the bar for excellence and execution. Only six of the 47 players are returning from last year’s varsity team, so there are many open positions to fill and plenty of opportunities for  newcomers. The defense will be the only glimpse from the 2010 season with all six returning seniors being defenders. Senior Jeremiah Wilkens made the…
