Students and staff at Nerinx Hall held a memorial service Friday to honor the life and memory of Clare Blase, a freshman student who died following a nearly two year fight against an aggressive form of cancer. She was just days away from her 15th birthday, according to her obituary in St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Blase's story was chronicled in September on Patch, ahead of the 2012 Pedal The Cause event. "Pedal the Cause gives me hope,” Blase, of Shrewsbury, said at the time. “To me, hope means that I can look forward to being around the people I love for a long time. The annual fundraiser to benefit cancer research in St. Louis hits area streets Sunday.
Drivers Sunday will want to take particular care on roads winding from downtown St. Louis all the way to the Western reaches of St. Louis County, as bicyclists hit the pavement. They're supporting Pedal The Cause, the annual fundraiser that benefits local research at the Siteman Cancer Center, the Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Jewish Hospital and Children's Hospital. In some cases, there will be event marshals along the course to provide guidance. The …

Two weeks later, she went to the doctor for a colonoscopy, to find out why her training had been, in her opinion, "off," and why her injuries weren't healing. Four hours later she learned she had stage 4 colon cancer, which had metastasized to her liver. The bucket list Griege chose a course of …

Great story and inspiration. I have done a marathon, but an ironman is huge. That's great. We have a few goals that are similar. You can see my list http://iqdit.com/bucketlist/qid/15/u/graff41   more ›

Clare was the strongest, happiest, outgoing, and most energetic girl I've ever met. When I came to Saint Michael's in Shrewsbury, she was the first friend I made. I know she's dancing her heart away in heaven right now, and I'm just glad she's finally in peace. Love you Clare Bear.   more ›
