Clint Zweifel Says He'll Serve Full Term As State Treasurer

Just elected to a four-year term in November, Missouri's State Treasurer is seen by some as a possible candidate for Lieutenant Governor if a vacancy is created.

In what he called a "sincere statement," Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel told Patch Wednesday he would serve a full term in office, despite some speculation he could be a candidate for lieutenant governor. Zweifel, a former state representative from Florissant, spoke to a group of small business owners at Pulaski Bank in Creve Coeur Wednesday. Political watchers will be keeping a close eye on what happens Feb. 9 in Southeast Missouri, as Republicans in the state's Eighth Congressional district decide who to put up in a June special election to fill the seat left empty by Jo Ann Emerson's resignation. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder is one of a handful of candidates interested in running for the vacant Eighth Congressional district seat. He's …

Emerson's Resignation Means Clay Is Now the Senior Missouri Delegate

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson announced she would retire from her seat in U.S. House of Representatives in 2013.

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Missouri, announced Monday that she would resign from the U.S. House of Representatives in February 2013, nearly a month after winning reelection. Emerson represents the 8th Congressional District in southeastern Missouri, stretching north into Jefferson County and west to include Rolla. She plans to become the president and CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative.  She first took office in 1996, replacing her husband, Bill Emerson, after his death. With Emerson's retirement, Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-Missouri, becomes the longest serving member of the Missouri Congressional delegation. Clay represents the 1st Congressional District, which includes Olivette and part of Creve Coeur. Clay released the following …

Election Reflection: State Senator Jane Cunningham Weighs In

The Chesterfield Republican spoke with Patch on Election night in Creve Coeur.

As election returns came in on Tuesday night, political campaigns from across the state held watch parties around St. Louis to gather with their supporters on the big night.  Chesterfield-area State Senator Jane Cunningham, who still officially represents Creve Coeur until the next General Assembly is sworn in in January, made the rounds to some of the events, including Lt. Governor Peter Kinder's gathering at the Drury Inn. Cunningham, who ended up a casualty of the redistricting process, decided not to run for the State Senate in another district, and also stayed out of the Second District U.S. House race. In an interview that came before winners were formally declared, she talked with Patch about the Presidential race, the U.S. Senate …

Peter Kinder Wins Third Term As Missouri Lieutenant Governor

Phone call concession from Democrat Susan Montee came just before 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

Peter Kinder, the Republican Lieutenant Governor of the State of Missouri, celebrated his election to a third term with supporters in Creve Coeur Tuesday night. Kinder was doing a radio interview by phone with talk show host Dana Loesch just before 11 p.m. Tuesday when he received a call from his opponent, former State Auditor Susan Montee. He returned the call to Montee and praised her concession, acknowledging that it was not an easy one to make. With 2577 of 3380 precincts reporting, Kinder maintained a 52.9-41.8 lead over Montee late Tuesday night. Around 10:30 p.m. Kinder spoke to reporters and while not outright declaring victory, spoke like a candidate who knew he would carry the night. He criticized Governor Jay Nixon for having …

Jewish Food Pantry's New Home Celebrated In Creve Coeur

Community members and local and state dignitaries gathered Sunday for the ceremonial opening of the Max and Drew Erlich Center.

The actual work of the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry won't begin at a new home on Bauer Boulevard for a few more weeks, but on Sunday, people from across the St. Louis area and the state converged on Creve Coeur to pay tribute to the couple responsible for making it happen. The Max and Drew Erlich Center was celebrated in style, complete with proclamations and speeches from Creve Coeur Mayor Barry Glantz, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, State Representative Jill Schupp and others, including 2nd District U.S. House candidate Ann Wagner and Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder.  Check out our Facebook gallery of other photos from the event Max and Drew Erlich made a $1 million donation to Jewish Family and Children's …

Patch Poll: Missouri Republicans Concerned About Dave Spence's Chances In November

The latest "Red Arch" survey takes the pulse of Missouri Republicans regarding statewide races on the November ballot.

Missouri Republicans are bullish on the chances of Secretary of State candidate Shane Schoeller and Lt. Governor Peter Kinder's chances for re-election in November, but a majority are concerned that Dave Spence will not defeat Governor Jay Nixon next month. That's the biggest finding in the latest Patch "Red Arch" survey, a non-scientific project asking Republican activists questions tied to current issues in the 2012 election cycle. More than 70 people were invited to participate and 30 responded. When asked "Which statewide candidate are you most concerned about in November," a majority, 64.3 percent, named Spence. Next was Attorney General nominee Ed Martin and State Treasurer nominee Cole McNary at 14.3 percent, and Kinder at 7.1 …

Post-Primary: Todd Akin The Biggest Surprise & Jay Nixon Would Win In November

Patch's polling of influential Republicans and Democrats in Missouri also reveals Lt. Governor Peter Kinder has a lot of work to do to rebuild bridges within his own party.

If the November election was held today, a majority of political insiders polled in Missouri, both Democrats and Republicans agreed that Gov. Jay Nixon would win a second term over St. Louis businessman Dave Spence. That was one of the main results of a non-scientific survey of Patch's Red Arch/Blue Arch panelists, taken between Aug. 8 and Aug. 11, after last week's primary elections. A total of 29 responses came in from members of each party using an automated survey tool. When asked about the governor's race, 96.6 percent of Democrats said Nixon would win if the election were held today, while 37.9 percent of Republicans went with Spence in the matchup. U.S. Rep. Todd Akin's win in a spirited GOP primary fight to face Claire McCaskill …

Abolish Lieutenant Governor Job: Would You Do It?

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder is a Republican; the governor is a Democrat. What's the point of the lieutenant governor's office under those conditions?

We finished a primary election last week that, among other things, now pits incumbent Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder — a Republican — against Democratic former state auditor Susan Montee in the November election. These two powerful Missouri politicians will face off for what may be the most meaningless office in the state — particularly now, when Kinder is serving as lieutenant governor and the governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon, is a Democrat. As Kinder's website notes, the lieutenant governor "is elected separately from the governor and each can be a member of different political parties. Missouri's Constitution provides that the lieutenant governor assumes the powers and duties of the governor when the governor is absent from the state or unable to…

Illinois, too, although the system is a little wonky there as well: "Candidates for lieutenant governor are nominated independently of gubernatorial candidates, then thrown together as a one-vote-for-both partisan team in the general election. Uncomfortable pairings sometimes result, like the one then-Lt. Gov. Quinn had with former Gov. Rod Blagojevich." http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-…   more ›

Lt. Gov. Kinder Survives Primary Challenge

Incumbent beats back challenge from State Senator Brad Lager, will face Susan Montee in November.

Missouri Republican Lt. Governor Peter Kinder took the nomination in a bid for a third term Tuesday in a close primary race with challenger, State Senator Brad Lager. St. Charles resident Mike Carter came in third. Kinder appeared briefly at 11:15pm at the Creve Coeur Drury Inn, saying he was "humbled" by the win. Kinder with 44.2 percent, said both Carter (8.2 percent) and Lager (41.6 percent) called to congratulate, and apparently concede the race. Kinder will face former State Auditor Susan Montee who bested a field of eight contenders for the Democratic nomination. Montee won with a huge margin of 131,115 votes from a field of eight contenders. She won 44 percent of the vote. The next closest rival, Judy Baker, had 15 percent of the …

Haas Brings Campaign To Creve Coeur Township

Eight are in the race for the Democratic nomination to be Missouri's next Lieutenant Governor.

The St. Louis Beacon reported earlier this week on how the crowded field in the Democratic race for Lieutenant Governor has largely taken a low-key approach to the primary campaign. It is a stark contrast to the GOP contest pitting State Senator Brad Lager against incumbent Peter Kinder. Tuesday night, that toned-down campaign came to Creve Coeur, when Bill Haas, a St. Louis School Board member and a former congressional candidate now part of an eight way primary, spoke to Township Democrats. Creve Coeur Township also includes portions of Maryland Heights and Ladue. Haas acknowledged that former State Auditor Susan Montee is the likely favorite in the race, given that she had already held statewide office, but he pointed out that Montee …
