Pentagon Lifts Ban on Women in Frontline Combat

More than 130 women have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, including First Lieutenant Roslyn L. Schulte of Ladue.

Defense Sec. Leon Panetta announced Thursday that the Pentagon would be lifting the ban on women serving in frontline combat roles. According to The New York Times, the "decision overturns a 1994 Pentagon rule that restricts women from artillery, armor, infantry and other such combat roles, even though in reality women have frequently found themselves in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, where more than 20,000 have served. As of last year, more than 800 women had been wounded in the two wars and more than 130 had died." The Times story noted that several high profile lawsuits have increased pressure on Pentagon offiicials. Brian, when was the last Nuclear Detonation in combat? 1945? I have spoke with prior service females and they were glad they were restricted from frontline action. How will the military chose who is the right female for the frontline? Pick straws? Not every female in the military would be strong enough to carry the load, so what do they do now? Stephen Colbert Asks Russ Carnahan: Are You A Genetically Modified Vegetable From Monsanto?

Candidate for the First Congressional district seat sits in the 'Colbert Report' hot seat.

But Colbert began the Q & A focusing on Monsanto, the Creve Coeur agri-giant. Colbert asked if the company's headquarters were in his district (the new 1st), and Rep. Carnahan said it was. Click here to go to the Colbert Nation website to see the segment Under the new boundaries, the company's headquarters appear to be physically located in the new 2nd Congressional …

Carnahan vs. Clay: Court Confirms Redistricting

The Missouri Supreme Court has affirmed redistricting lines drawn earlier this year, pitting the two incumbents against each other.

The filing stands. Rep. Russ Carnahan will face incumbent Rep. William Lacy Clay in the August primary to be the Democratic nominee in the 1st Congressional District.  The Missouri State Supreme Court issued a ruling Friday on the constitutionality of redistricted state House and U.S. House districts. The ruling affirmed previous lower court rulings, which had Rep. Carnahan's home moved from his current 3rd District to the 1st District, which Rep. Clay represents.  The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that in its challenge to the new lines, a group claimed a nonpartisan redistricting commission used closed-door meetings. The court stuck to a lower judge’s ruling that the commission’s map is constitutional.  The primary will be held Aug. 7…

The point of the story is that the redistricting maps were upheld by the courts. That's why it was relevant.   more ›
