Area roads expected to get a wintry mix through Friday night.
The St. Louis metropolitan area is under a winter weather advisory which began at 3 p.m. Friday lasting through midnight. According to the National Weather Service, there will be a light, freezing drizzle throughout the area. An icy glaze could cover streets during the advisory, making travel potentially treacherous. Missouri Department of Transportation spokesman Andrew Gates tells Patch that motorists should be especially careful on overpasses, bridges and ramps, where ice can form even when the streets are clear. “It’s basically the same as any other winter storm,” he said. Police and road crews are preparing for the evening commute. MoDOT crews will work into the night, after slick roads and accidents prevented morning road treatments.
UPDATED: 4:00 p.m.- Missouri Department of Transportation officials said in news release Thursday afternoon, snow removal operations will be underway all evening and overnight. This news comes after messy morning roads throughout St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties. "We have full crews (204 trucks) throughout the St. Louis region focusing on re-treating every interstate and major route with salt, chemicals and beet juice before rush-hour. Chemicals have to be used with salt to be effective in these low 20's temperatures to break up any icy patches," MoDOT stated in the news release. 1.) With the increased traffic on the Daniel Boone Bridge due to lane closures on the Blanchette, why did they decide to do blasting now? It doesn't make sense to have closures on one of the alternate routes. Drivers in the Lake St. Louis/Wentzville area do not have easy access to the Page extension. 2.)
