Ladue's Cornell Johnston Has Now Scored 1,000 Career Points

Milestone reached in the last six minutes of the game with Affton Friday night.

Towards the end of the home game for Ladue with Affton Friday night, students were holding up two fingers. But they weren’t calling for the two-point shot. Rather, they were telling everyone in Nielson Gymnasium that junior point guard Cornell Johnston was a mere two points from reaching 1,000 points for a career. With a flair for the dramatic, and with two defenders draped on his shoulders, the speedy guard pulled up in the lane, fired a floater for two points, and the goal had been reached. There were just 6 minutes left in Ladue’s 80-58 route of Affton. Coach Chad Anderson called time out to recognize the milestone. The crowd loved the effort, and the big win, the 18th out of 22 this season. This is how it was done over the past  three …

Ladue's Guards Pile Up a 62-36 Win over Whitfield

Opening game of the American Heart Association Public-Private Showcase at Maryville University Saturday.

The Ladue Rams took care of business in the opening game of the American Heart Association Public-Private Showcase at Maryville University City Saturday. Ladue’s four guards combined for a splendid 39 points and the Rams crushed Whitfield 62-36. Ladue runs its record to 16-4, and winners of 9 of the last 10 in a row. They suffered a disappointing road loss to Normandy earlier this week, 47-41. Ladue’s coach Chad Anderson likes what he sees from his talented guards. “When teams zone us, we’re going to get our shots from our guards. They have the green light to shoot,” said Anderson. Smurf patrol takes charge  Sometimes, the Rams back liners look like smurfs running around. The Rams had 11-3 pointers in the victory. Cornell Johnson (13), …

Ladue Stays Red Hot With Blowout Win Over Bayless

Cornell Johnston scores 16 points, drops off nine assists, and grabs four steals to lead Rams to seventh win in a row.

Fresh off a pair of wins over highly-ranked CBC and much-less regarded Wentzville Holt, the Ladue High boys basketball team looked like it was in the mood for a much easier night when it took on Bayless High Wednesday night. The Rams, who have been a stalwart defensive club all season, came out of the locker room and played perhaps their best eight minutes of defense this entire season during in the first quarter, and held the visiting Bronchos to just two points, on their way to a comfortable 57-39 victory at home. Ladue, which has eased its way up to the No. 5 spot in the area Top 20 rankings, has now won seven straight ballgames dating back to the semifinals of the MICDS Holiday Tournament. Last week, the Rams had perhaps their best …

Last-Minute Heroics Leads Ladue To Monumental Upset Over No. 2 CBC

Rams get 20 points from Andrew Maddock, and 16 points from Cornell Johnston in 60-58 victory over Cadets in championship game of DC Wilcutt Tournament.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- From the moment he realized his team would be facing the No. 2 ranked team in all of St. Louis area basketball, in the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament, Ladue High head coach Chad Anderson preached the same mantra over and over again. "I told our kids (Thursday) at practice, and (Friday) before the game," said Anderson, "in order for us to win the big games, you've got to believe in yourself, number one. You've got to compete. And you've got to trust your teammates. And I think that is the difference in this team and the past teams we've had. These kids believe." Well, that belief became reality late Friday night, as Ladue earned its biggest win -- possibly ever -- in a stunning 60-58 nail-biter over the …

Big Night Of Local Hoops Includes Doubleheader At MICDS, Ladue In Championship Game At CBC

Bombers' and Rams' boys and girls will begin the night with double-dip at McDonnell, while No. 7 Ladue hopes to play giant-killer against No. 2 CBC.

The first big night of the high school hoops season comes tonight, with a trio of big ballgames featuring some of the best teams from the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area. On a city-wide scale, most eyes will be trained on the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament out at CBC High School in Town and Country, where the Ladue High boys will take on the No. 2-ranked CBC Cadets at 8 p.m. CBC was the area's preseason No. 1, with at least three top college prospects on their roster, including 6'7 swingman Jordan Barnett, 6'6 power forward Ray Doby, and 6'6 shooting guard Patrick McCaw. The Cadets lost their No. 1 ranking after falling in the championship game of the Meramec Tournament to Hazelwood Central back on December 30. Since then, …

Johnston Outplays Glotta In Battle Of Top Point Guards To Lead Ladue Past Ft. Zumwalt North In Semifinals Of CBC Tournament

Ladue junior Cornell Johnston nets game-high 20 points, 11 assists and holds area-leading scorer Chaz Glotta to just 12 points in 65-50 victory that will send Rams to Friday night championship game against CBC.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- Back when the 2012-2013 area boys basketball schedule was announced, one of the most intriguing matchups on the slate was a showcase game at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout that would pit two of the area's best point guards against one another with Ladue's Cornell Johnston going up against Ft. Zumwalt North's Chaz Glotta. Johnston, the Rams' pass-happy junior who leads the area in assists (8.9 apg), was supposed to face perhaps his toughest individual matchup of the season going up against Glotta, Zumwalt North's junior shot machine, who leads the area in scoring (25.8 ppg). At the last minute though, the Ramey Shootout folks made a change and Zumwalt North wound up playing Riverview Gardens and Ladue played…

DaGue's Dominance Inside Leads Ladue To Tournament Victory Over St. Charles

Rams' 6'9 senior center had 17 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocked shots in 54-38 win that advances Ladue to MICDS Tournament semifinals.

Starting early hasn't bothered the Ladue boys basketball team one bit at the 2012 MICDS Holiday Invitational Tournament. The Rams have played the opening game on both days at the MICDS, and both times have delivered superb performances to advance to the tourney semifinals. On Wednesday, it was senior Austin DaGue who led the way for Ladue, with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocked shots in a 54-38 win over St. Charles. The Rams were playing without junior forward Andrew Maddock, who suffered a knee injury at a team practice on Sunday. Head coach Chad Anderson said he wasn't sure how bad the injury was, but that he thought it was safer to hold Maddock out of Wednesday's game until the 6'7 forward could be examined by a doctor. After the …

Ladue Opens MICDS Boys Tournament With Blowout Win Over Francis Howell

Top-seeded Rams took control in the second quarter, then cruised through the second half to advance to tournament quarterfinals next week.

With a week off from game action, leaving them nothing to do but practice and stew over last weekend's three-point loss at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout, Ladue High boys basketball coach Chad Anderson wasn't real sure how his Rams would respond to being named the No. 1 seed at this year's MICDS Holiday Invitational Tournament. In Anderson's recollection, this is the first time Ladue has earned top billing at any tournament or multi-game showcase, and the coach just wasn't sure how his crew would handle it. "You just never know how 16- and 17-year old kids are going to handle these kinds of accolades or pressure," Anderson said. "Every kid is different. So you never really know until you step on the court." As it turned out, …

Patch High School Hoops Roundup: JBS Boys, St. Joe Girls Remain Unbeaten Heading Into Holiday Break

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

As the Missouri high school basketball season passes the quarter pole, two things have become crystal clear. The John Burroughs boys team is really good. And so is the St. Joseph's Academy girls team. Those points have been driven home emphatically, as both teams have begun the new season with unblemished records. The JBS boys are 7-0, following a sensational 56-45 win over O'Fallon Christian at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout at Lindenwood University last Saturday. That victory capped an incredible week for the Bombers, who won all three games they played, adding in triumphs over Brentwood (65-31, back on December 10) and Clayton (60-59 on Decmeber 13). Senior guard Foye Oluokun has been stuffing the stat sheet all year for …

Questionable Calls, Non-Calls Cost Ladue in Vianney Tournament Championship Game

Junior Cornell Johnston had eight points and 11 assists to lead the Rams, but had a critical turnover call go against him and a non-foul call not go for him in final seconds of a 52-51 loss to Belleville West.

For the first two full games and 31 minutes and 25 seconds of his team's games so far this season, Ladue High junior point guard Cornell Johnston ran circles around the defenses from Clayton, Eureka, and Belleville West High Schools. But in the final 35 seconds of Friday's 46th Annual Jerry Boeckman Memorial/Vianney Invitational Tournament championship game, Belleville West managed to catch up with Johnston and forced a critical turnover and a missed shot in the final seconds that allowed the Maroons to escape with a 52-51 win over the Rams. "It was a hard fought game," Ladue head coach Chad Anderson said. "We knew we had to match their intensity. I thought our kids battled, and for both teams I think it was difficult to score." It …
