Patch Names The 2012 Creve Coeur Newsmaker of the Year

Mayor Barry Glantz is our choice, but there was competition. Tell us what you think.

Lots of news happened in Creve Coeur in 2012. There were big business openings, political events impacting the state and national stage, jaw dropping allegations in both civil and criminal courts. But when I really sat down and thought about it, it wasn't hard for me to decide that if we're really talking about 2012 in the hyperlocal sense, the choice for Creve Coeur Newsmaker of the Year should be Mayor Barry Glantz. Editor's Note: The following should not be construed as an endorsement. It is merely a set of observations gleaned over the past year. Glantz won a contentious race against Laura Bryant to succeed longtime Mayor Harold Dielmann. The campaign, which by itself took more than a year to play out, featured two people who cared …

Chaminade Names Antoine Torrey New Head Football Coach

Doug Taylor stepped down at the end of the 2012 campaign after 16 seasons on the Red Devil sideline.

Chaminade has named Antoine Torrey as the school's next Varsity Head Football coach. The announcement was made Tuesday during an afternoon press conference.  Torrey, an assistant at Chaminade and former head coach at Normandy, succeeds Doug Taylor, who wrapped up a 40 year high school football coaching career in 2012, including 16 on the job at Chaminade.  Torrey 41, spent the past two seasons as the running game coordinator for the Red Devils, and also serves as an assistant athletic director, physical education teacher and wrestling coach at the school. Athletic Director Tom Fernandez said the school was looking for someone who was a teacher, had high character, could serve a a role model while promoting academics and building pride in …

Taylor Era Ends At Chaminade With District Loss To Webster Groves

The Statesmen started off the postseason strong, shutting out the Red Devils 28-0 Friday.

In the Webster Groves High School football team's first Districts game Oct. 26, the Statesmen held their opponent, the Chaminade Red Devils (4-6), to a goose egg on the scoreboard. Webster Groves (7-2) took the victory 28-0 with four touchdowns and four succeeding extra point kicks. Statesmen junior Bri'on Sanders ran for 87 yards, taking it to the endzone twice in the 1st quarter. Junior D.J. Johnson took care of the other two touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th, with solid carries from senior Marlon Peal, who ran for 151 yards on the night. The game marked the end of Doug Taylor's tenure as head coach of the Red Devil program. Taylor announced earlier this season that his 16th campaign on the sideline would be his last.  Watch the FOX Sports …

Red Devils Honor Their Seniors And Coach, Defeat Cape Girardeau In 2OT

Running Back Justin Smith totes 2 TDs, including the game winner against the Central Tigers.

The Chaminde Red Devils overcame injury and a Cape Girardeau comeback Friday night to defeat the visiting Cape Girardeau Central Tigers 21-14 in what was Chaminade Head Coach Doug Taylor's last home game on Senior Night. See Photos, including Senior Night festivities from Chaminade's win over Cape Girardeau Central Taylor, who has been Red Devil-In Chief on the Chaminade sidelines for 16 seasons, announced earlier this season he would step down after a total of 40 seasons coaching football. Senior Justin Smith, playing his last game at home, found the endzone for the second time on the night with a 19 yard run in the second overtime to give the Red Devils the win. Smith, who said his head been throbbing earlier in the game when he landed …

Chaminade Head Football Coach Doug Taylor Stepping Down After 2012

Coach says he'll miss the competition, but that it was time to leave the sidelines after "a great run." He'll remain with the Creve Coeur school.

Earlier this season, when he was hospitalized during Chaminade's season opener against Rockwood Summit, Doug Taylor's players tweets suggested this would be his last year coaching football. Late this week, he confirmed it to Patch and talked about it after the Red Devils lost 28-0 loss to De Smet Friday. With 40 years of high school football coaching, including the last 16 at Chaminade under his belt where he's had the likes of Jack Meiners, Rob Standard, Christian Suntrup among scores of players, he said he just felt it was time and that he'd had "a great run." "We always got dominated I think by the De Smets and the SLUHs and the Vianneys and the CBCs and I think in the last 16 years we’ve closed that gap dramatically. I think our kids …

High School Football: Chaminade Overcomes Mother Nature and Roosevelt Thursday

Second half interceptions help fuel Red Devil comeback and lead to a lopsided score against Roosevelt.

If you've heard the well-worn phrase, "this game was not as close as the score would indicate," sit back and try to digest how a 63-34 game could possibly make you feel that the opposite were true. That's one way of interpreting what happened at Roosevelt High School Thursday night, as Chaminade and the homestanding Roughriders did battle a little earlier in the week than expected. The teams moved up what would have been a 1 p.m Saturday game as teams around the area look for ways to avoid what promises to be a wet weekend. In stark contrast to last season, when Chaminade blasted Roosevelt 54-6 in Creve Coeur, the Roughriders used big plays by quarterback Codi Burgess to wide receivers Terence Davis and Gary Darden and Chaminade miscues …

2012 Chaminade College Prep Football Season Preview

Size on both the offensive and defensive line returns for the Red Devils in 2012.

Chaminade Head Football Coach Doug Taylor is back at the helm for another Red Devil season, and just like years past, he barely has to look outside his own conference to find a tough schedule of opponents. Metro Catholic Conference foes De Smet and CBC are in the Top 5 in the Class 6 preseason rankings. Rockwood Summit, also on the schedule, are number 5 in the Class 6 poll. Among Taylor's tasks this season--replace a gutty running back in Dixon Anthon, and Brandon Minor, a linebacker getting interest from Division I college programs who transferred to McCluer North.  Coach Taylor answered a few of the big questions heading into Friday's opener at Summit. 1. Key players Returning:  Bryon Beal 6’3” 355 Sr. OG/DT, Byron Beal 6’3” 330 Sr. OG/…

Prep Football Preview: Chaminade Embraces Underdog Status

The Red Devils have to rebuild after losing standouts Rob Standard and Christian Suntrup.

Program sales should be brisk early this fall at Chaminade football games. The roster is filled with unfamiliar names as the Red Devils have to rebuild after losing some of the best skill position players in the St. Louis area. Gone to Boston College is quarterback Christian Suntrup, who was a three-year starter with a couple of starts in his freshman season. Also gone is record-setting running back Rob Standard, a three-year starter who is now at Iowa State University. "We had a senior laden group last year with an experienced quarterback and the best rusher in St. Louis history," Red Devil coach Doug Taylor said. "We will have a lot of guys who people don't know. Hopefully, they will know them by the time the season is over. "We have a …
