February 6 is the first day high school seniors can confirm their college choices. The University of Missouri, Ohio State and Oklahoma State are among the NCAA schools looking to St. Louis for recruits.
College coaches are getting their money's worth out of fax machines today. This is the first day high school seniors playing Football, Baseball Field Hockey, Soccer, Track and Field, Cross Country, Men's Water Polo can submit a signed letter of intent to play at the college level. Ezekiel Elliott, the John Burroughs running back who gave a verbal pledge to the Ohio State Buckeyes last spring, confirmed that decision late Wednesday afternoon in an announcement that was also carried on live local television. Bombers' and Rams' boys and girls will begin the night with double-dip at McDonnell, while No. 7 Ladue hopes to play giant-killer against No. 2 CBC.
The first big night of the high school hoops season comes tonight, with a trio of big ballgames featuring some of the best teams from the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area. On a city-wide scale, most eyes will be trained on the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament out at CBC High School in Town and Country, where the Ladue High boys will take on the No. 2-ranked CBC Cadets at 8 p.m. CBC was the area's preseason No. 1, with at least three top college prospects on their roster, including 6'7 swingman Jordan Barnett, 6'6 power forward Ray Doby, and 6'6 shooting guard Patrick McCaw. Senior guard knocked down two huge shots in the final minute of regulation to bring Bombers back from seven points down, in eventual 50-46 overtime win over Pattonville.
CREVE COEUR -- With just over one minute left in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Chaminade Christmas Tournament championship game against Pattonville, John Burroughs senior Trevor Bain had made just one shot. He’d only taken two shots the entire game at that point, and had spent most of the night helping set up the Bomber offense, while also playing superb defense against the Pirates litany of ultra-quick guards. But with his team down by seven points, and so close to possibly suffering their first loss of the season, Bain stepped up and knocked down two clutch long range shots that helped Burroughs force overtime. CREVE COEUR -- For the first two quarters of Wednesday’s Chaminade Christmas Tournament opener between the host Red Devils and visiting John Burroughs, the visitors looked like maybe they’d eaten too much turkey and dressing during their holiday dinners the night before. The Bombers were slow on defense, late on close-outs, and flat ineffective as rebounders. As the Missouri high school basketball season passes the quarter pole, two things have become crystal clear. The John Burroughs boys team is really good. And so is the St. Joseph's Academy girls team. Those points have been driven home emphatically, as both teams have begun the new season with unblemished records. The JBS boys are 7-0, following a sensational 56-45 win over O'Fallon Christian at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout at Lindenwood University last Saturday. That victory capped an incredible week for the Bombers, who won all three games they played, adding in triumphs over Brentwood (65-31, back on December 10) and Clayton (60-59 on Decmeber 13). The teams were forced to regroup Saturday after severe weather Friday.
"Unfinished Business" Every team it seems has a slogan. Given the weather conditions Friday afternoon which forced Burroughs and St. Louis Priory to abandon their football game in the 2nd quarter with the Bombers leading the Rebels 35-0, Burroughs' slogan seems awfully appropriate. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the teams finished Saturday with Burroughs winning 59-28. Burroughs built the advantage in large part thanks to the work of senior Ezekiel Elliott, the all-everything running back who has pledged to play for Ohio State University.
