De Smet's Neal Ends Recruiting Drama: 'Don't Worry about me doing a J-Mac'

The highly sought after wide receiver downplayed last-minute attempts to sway his decision to attend the University of Oklahoma.

Roughly seven months after De Smet's Durron Neal made a verbal pledge to attend the University of Oklahoma, the standout wide receiver was true to his word Wednesday, and signed a national letter of intent to join the Sooner program in the fall. Neal's was the first letter to appear on the OU fax machine just after 7 a.m. local time. His signature puts a wrap on a process that angered Missouri fans who wanted the St. Louis area star to stay home, and later brought anxiety in the Oklahoma fanbase when he said he would have decommitted had OU assistant Jay Norvell, his main recruiter, left to join the staff at Wisconsin. Then there was talk in recent days that Dorial Green-Beckham, the prized Wide Receiver from Springfield who opted for …

Sign Me Up! Local Athletes Make College Pledges Official

Creve Coeur Patch has coverage of today's National Signing Day

Despite being brought up in the generation of Twitter and Facebook, the fax machine is probably the most important piece of technology for some Creve Coeur area athletes today. Wednesday marks the first day high school senior athletes in Football and a handful of other sports, can officially sign and submit their college letters of intent. Despite the nearly unprecedented buildup playing out in Springfield, MO and the recruitment of Wide Receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, who will announce his decision on ESPNU this morning, there were no surprises so far for Creve Coeur area athletes. De Smet's Durron Neal, Parkway North's Donavin Newsom and Parkway Central's Brandon Sheperd all submitted their information to Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma …

The Creve Coeur Patch Sports Year In Review

Nationwide attention for high school basketball, and prolific years for local wideouts were among the stories which dominated the sports headlines in 2011.

As 2011 draws to a close, Creve Coeur Patch is taking a look back at some of the biggest stories of the year in a variety of categories, and we want to know what you think, too. Here are three we picked out, in no particular order: Bradley Beal's Senior Season The Chaminade standout brought a close to one of the most storied high school basketball careers in St. Louis basketball history with a senior season filled with accolades and nationwide attention. He led the Red Devils to the state quarterfinals, averaging 32.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.7 steals per game. Normally, "all-everything" is little more than a lazy writer's platitude, but in this case, Beal literally fit the bill. He was the Gatorade Basketball Player of the …

Big Week For Prep Receivers: Neal and Chesson Make News

Creve Coeur-area football seniors from Ladue and De Smet earn honors and decide their future.

Ladue Horton Watkins High School Senior Jehu Chesson wants to play in "The Big House." According to The Detroit Free Press and The Michigan affiliate of rivals.com, Chesson has made a verbal pledge to play for the University of Michigan Wolverines. Chesson named earlier this month to All Class 4 Second team by the Missouri High School Football Coaches Association, had reportedly been weighing scholarship offers from several other Big Ten schools. Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated is out with the publication's high school All-American Team, which included honorable mention praise for De Smet's Durron Neal. Neal was named the Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year by the MHSFA. Neal has already announced his intent to play at the University of …

Southern L'Attitudes

An Affair Almost as Big as the Royal Wedding

Homecoming at Ladue High School is much different than those at schools in small town Oklahoma.

Saturday, I went to the Ladue High School homecoming game. I was working and gathering information for a story on both the football game and the homecoming court when I noticed some unusual happenings. Coming from the south, I had very different ideas about what I would see at the Ladue homecoming game. I expected a lot of pomp and circumstance. As Caleb Ellis put it in his bio, I thought it would be an event “likely be bigger than Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.” To high school students in small towns in the South, homecoming is arguably one of the biggest events of the school year. When I arrived at the field, I searched for the homecoming queen contestants. From my experience, they were identifiable by the fancy dresses …

I always loved seeing the girls dress up for homecoming. But the way Ladue does it makes sense when the game is midday and the dance is at night. Either way, the girls still get to dress up in a frilly dress. I think most girls like that!   more ›

Prep Football Preview: De Smet Hopes For Two Winning Trips To The Dome In 2011

Durron Neal will lead the Spartans' attack again this year.

As De Smet football coach Pat Mahoney begins anew in 2011, the veteran coach still has flashbacks to how 2010 began and ended. The 2010 season started with a loss to Hazelwood Central, and it ended with a loss to those very same Hawks. And what burns the Spartans is that there was a fine line between winning and losing both those contests and being so close to winning it all. "A goal is simply a dream with a date attached to it," said Mahoney, who begins his 11th season as Spartans coach with a 67-34 record that includes one state championship (2005). "There's a date and it's not going anywhere. Whether you get there or not is going to depend on whether you believe it or you're just saying it. We've been there three times in the last five…

DeSmet's Agnew and Neal: Taking the Next Step in Football

Senior, Agnew looks forward to the "family atmosphere" at Oregon State. Junior, Neal has his pick of Division 1 schools.

Creve Coeur Patch caught up with a pair of DeSmet track sprinters who are using the track and field season to gear up for football season. Senior Malcom Agnew is  signed and sealed to play next fall at Oregon State. His Spartan teammate Durron Neal, a Junior, could join him. According to rivals.com, the Beavers are one of 20 schools known to have made the all-purpose sensation a scholarship offer. Agnew liked the "family atmosphere" on his two visits to OSU. He said there were several reasons why he picked Oregon State. (Head) "Coach (Mike) Riley  is a great man," he said. "They saw a lot in me, and they really made me feel welcome when I went up there...going to be a great time," he said. Agnew said he met players James Rogers (senior …
