Max Scherzer Pitches Through Family Pain

The Parkway Central grad pitched and lost Saturday just days after suffering a more important loss.

In the world of sports, the cliche of soldiering on despite "adversity" is often thrown around at the drop of a hat. For the past few days, a family mourning the loss of a son has been forced to do just that in the face of real grief.

Alex Scherzer, 24, died Thursday. Media reports have not identified an official cause. His brother, Max, took two days off to attend to "personal matters" and then went back to work Saturday--on the mound for the Detroit Tigers against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Max Scherzer pitched 6 innings and took the loss against the Pirates, but as mlive.com reported, the former Colt and Missouri Tiger pitcher has the support of his teammates.
